“When they invited me to the Nazi Party, all I heard was the word ‘party’ and I accepted. I was as surprised as anyone when all that other stuff came out!”

Apple has spent about the same on R&D and capex for *every* product since 2007 (~$412B) as Alphabet has spent on R&D and capex since 2022 *alone* (~$403B). For $412B, Apple has made a total of $993B. For $403B, Alphabet has made a total of $366B. AI will not be a step-change in valuations.

As @edzitron.com and many others have said, the returns on AI investments just *aren't there*. As an investor, who would you trust your money with: the company who makes over $2 back for every dollar spent on capex and R&D? Or the company company that makes ~$0.9 per $1 of combined R&D or capex?

Obviously Alphabet is still massively profitable, but those margins are shrinking in pursuit of AI — and the investments, by the raw numbers, just *don't make sense*.

This is just pulled from both companies' 10-Ks and reports. So this is *mostly* just Alphabet's ads and services earnings, which have very little to do with these R&D and capex numbers — which, as we all know, are just for AI.

Never thought I'd see Bernie helping out Amodei, Altman, Zuckerberg, and every other billionaire who pushes the "AI is oh-so smart" narrative to juice their valuations.

I spoke to Anthropic’s AI agent Claude about AI collecting massive amounts of personal data and how that information is being used to violate our privacy rights. What an AI agent says about the dangers of AI is shocking and should wake us up. youtu.be/h3AtWdeu_G0?...

Writing can be frustrating and exhausting, and sometimes it can feel like flying. Being able to articulate what I mean in words all the time has made me smarter and happier too. Writing a lot is deeply important and will change your life. Even if you think it sucks! It probably does at first!

if you could drop your poop into an AI and have it turn it back into nutritious and delicious food, and you could eat that food, would you eat it?

Writers if you could drop your novel or short story into an AI and have it make a great and watchable movie out of your story, and you could sell that movie, would you do it? #writers #WritingCommunity

"I also believe that we, as a society, will face a violent paradigm shift as a result of the AI bubble bursting, because it revealed how many people do not understand stuff."

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

I am terrified that the end of the AI bubble will be magnitudes worse for the global economy than the dot com bubble, and for society at large. So many people have been so confidently wrong, and I'm not sure what happens when that becomes impossible to ignore. www.wheresyoured.at/dot-com-bubble/

Yeah and this worked especially well on CEOs and execs who haven't done any real work in years: "Holy hell, this AI just wrote a funny haiku! I can definitely replace the entire Keeping My Company Afloat Team with it."

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

slowly beginning to think that AI psychosis is far more broad than we think, in that there are people who it doesn't drive *crazy* who see, say, a coding model create a UI for something and immediately extrapolate that it will be The Future of All Stuff

ZIWE: Which is your favorite feature of ChatGPT - the people killing themselves or the plagiarism? ALTMAN: I, uh, I, well, I wouldn’t, ZIWE: How much money do you have in your wallet?

@edzitron.com, mind if I name my new punk band Patagonia Apes?

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

Big organizations are buying it because they think they have to, as there is a decent chunk of money that’s made just swindling execs. But that isn’t even really working! Everybody is doing cargo cult shit. Tech companies only know how to spend money and send 3000 Patagonia apes into your inbox.

Oh my god some fucking tech dingdong posted this on Twitter with the caption "AI games are going to be amazing" totally seriously, you have to watch it. You have to. In full screen.

The biggest problem for the big AI players is their complete and utter well-poisoning: they announce their dogpiss products are ready for primetime, people use them as if they're perfect, the products shit the bed — and then people just don't trust it ever again. It is very funny, though.
