minoh falls walk and bug museum thats super cute n tiny right there on the trail. probBly one of the most beautiful trails ive ever been on. it was both cozy and eerie with so much abandoned spaces but there were some cute cafes and shops along the river every so often.

My hot 💥 take today is I hate how every con became a ribbon con. Idc if it's fun for attendees they are EXPENSIVE and it doesn't translate to better sales or customer experience/service/retention/ etc. most people are caught off guard when they get one at an event that doesn't normally do em!

Is it fun for one or two events a year because it's a main focus for the con? sure! I can do that, but does EVERY con need to do it? NO! we barely make money as it is let alone bringing along $100-$300+ in disposable badge ribbons 🧍‍♂️it feels bad! I don't wanna do em!

like I see everyday how artists are struggling to make ends meet, even those in the con circuit, we can trim the fat a bit on the free disposables instead of trying to increasingly normalize expensive con trends at every con we go to.

no one asked but i've seen this image a couple times now. There are specific conventions for specific topics for a reason. if you have both, indie comics and fanart, hone it down to fit the con. I don't take my fanart to furry cons or medical art conferences. i could and would curate my booth for it

Imma add one other thing, This idea that the small indie creator is just too small next to a booth with more stuff on it, whether it's fanart or not, your booth IS your business in that con. you choose how to represent yourself and your work, it's ALL marketing regardless of how you feel about that

you can create a very enticing display for even just a couple of books. but even if your story is amazing and the art is great, a better display will probably translate to more interest and sales of that comic if you try and brand yourself a little more than some simple risers on a blank tablecloth

Also not shifting the blame from the con curators that just let this happen lol. nowadays most cons are jurying now and absolutely see what your booth is going to be before you get accepted, this dynamic should bother them if their goal truly is to showcase indie comics
