Really informative thread on the announced election procedures for the 4th prosecutor of the ICC 👇
TBC for States Parties to agree during #ASP25 🚨 but ⤵️ The 4th Prosecutor will be elected in December 2027 in The Hague (confirming ASP26 will not be in the US). The extremely delayed timeline at a time the OTP requires leadership should must be spotless - but 🧵⤵️ 📍 www.icc-cpi.int/news/bureau-...

The 4th Prosecutor will make or break the ICC as the institution it calls itself to be in the Preamble. The bar is high. States Parties must take their governance responsibility to elect the best to reassure victims their hope is worthwhile. Any hint of US appeasing will end it.
The next prosecutor of the International Criminal Court will be elected in December 2027. The ICC will be without a permanent prosecutor for two & a half years (May 2025-Dec 2027). (This is not a criticism of the current acting & deputy prosecutors). #ICC #OTP www.icc-cpi.int/news/bureau-...

If the EU & (many) states continue to ignore the growing chorus for concrete action the immediate horizon is going to be dominated by sanction overcompliance, and it is overcompliance which could potential prove to be a drill going deep into the centre of ICC operations. #USsanctions #ICC

We can have all the talk in the world about moving away from US dependencies & building digital resilience, however non of that will really matter if on a large scale companies decide to withdraw from engaging with the ICC because of uncertainty around possible risk. www.politico.eu/article/icc-...
The ICC Registrar is completely correct to be frustrated with the EU (& states) and to publicly express this frustration. We are likely to see more and more of these fragmentations & rifts emerging in the coming months. #USsanctions #ICC #EU #internationaljustice www.politico.eu/article/icc-...
This is an important recognition for the court, however it is somewhat problematic for the EU on the one hand to recognize the court's, and its officials, work upholding international justice, whilst simultaneously being indecisive & arguably weak regarding its responses to the US sanctions. #ICC

1) Bullies (Trump) don't compromise 2) There appears, at least at this stage, to be very little compromises available to states, the ICC and organizations which would not entail throwing away the integrity and legitimacy of the court. #Ussanctions #internationalcriminalcourt #ICC

however there is a well noted history of Trump not taking 'off-ramps' offered to him for foreign policy 'miscalculations'. (Unless the off-ramp being offered is to push the ICC and international criminal justice under the bus, then yes sure).
In short, meaningful negotiations always require compromise from all parties to the negotiation. For the current context:
