CSS-Tricks has a new owner! Yes, I've got the keys to the castle, so to speak. And, even after 12 years of working on the site, I'll admit I'm a little overwhelmed and nervous about that. https://css-tricks.com/css-tricks-has-a-new-owner/

You need to understand how important this is. If Amy Acton wins, she could reject (veto) bad bills, but Republicans could override her veto & force bills to become law anyway ......unless Ds also pick up 6+ seats in the #Ohio House Vote all the way DOWN BALLOT πΊπΈπΊπΈ www.statenews.org/government-p...
There was a City of Columbus training event for area commissioners scheduled for this morning, at 111 North Front Street. I drove down (reasons) and arrived just before the last of the street closures went into effect, trapping my car on the racecourse itself. Fun times.
Lines 3, 4, 7β12, 30 & Zoo Bus will detour Downtown for Gourdyβs Pumpkin Run on Sat., Oct. 24. Street closures may begin at 6 a.m., with reroutes ending by early afternoon. Customers on these lines: Plan extra travel time. View alerts at COTA.com/reroutes.

On this note: Who's making high-viz suit jackets these days? Betabrand used to have fashionable cycling gear, but that was 15+years ago.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday OndΕej SurΓ½ saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Yes and also this sort of 'uniparty' nonsense feels so hollow deployed in the midst of a national stove-touching. It turns out the difference between a 'milquetoast corporate Democrat' and Trump was really big! President Harris would not be driving trans soldiers out of the military!
youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"

Now that both parts are up, here's a short π§΅on my deep dive into why American roads are a sea of SUVs and trucks β and no, it's not just "consumer demand." π First: the light truck loophole βΒ which was closed recently! But not in a way people are celebrating ...

This video camera study showed that less than 5% of people on bikes broke traffic laws while riding bikes, yet 66% of people did so while driving. And perhaps even more importantly, if you REALLY want even MORE bike-riders to obey laws, build more protected bike infrastructure. Via @carltonreid.com

The macOS built-in curl, git, pip, python3, perl, ruby, and openssl all read /etc/ssl/cert.pem, which still has the emSign root, but they don't check revocation like Apple's Secure Transport libraries. This is, uh, a problem. git and pip especially. I added a short-term workaround to this page.
π¨ Six WebPKI Intermediate CAs are compromised. This is bigger than Heartbleed, but a client-side issue. Anything that verifies certificates against public roots, like most TLS clients, is/was affected. Details, live test, patched versions and workarounds at emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com Act now.

A very weird article, from a @matternews.bsky.social contributor!
A βdata procurement workerβ for an AI company reached out to me about buying my journalism documents. I was too curious to resist a meeting about their plans. Today for @columjournreview.bsky.social !! www.cjr.org/feature/an-a...

I know I'm a broken record on this, but one part of what is going on is that people have literally no idea what the US immigration system actually is; effectively, that there are no pathways into the country legally for someone who wants to wait in line.
New Marist poll of Texas finds 61% say undocumented immigrants should stay in US if meet certain requirements. Only 35% say they should leave. A majority of noncollege white men (Trump base) says stay. Supports my case (see piece/thread below) that Trump opened way for new pro-immigrant consensus
Might've lost my @bikelaneuprising.bsky.social jacket on Tuesday, either on the way to or at the @transitcolumbus.org meeting. Library and restaurant haven't seen it, so I hope it ended up someplace where it will be worn and appreciated.

Now that I've made plans to see "The History of Concrete" with friends, I'm concerned. Is this more of the infrastructure films of my youth, or is this like "Joe Pera Helps You Find A Perfect Christmas Tree" from last year's @senatormeow.bsky.social Christmas movie watchlist?
