DeepSeek’s R1 model is challenging the very foundations of the past two years of generative AI hype, wiping $1 trillion of the value of major US tech companies.
But it’s also another example that the US strategy to try to contain Chinese tech is failing — and pushing them to get even more creative.
The fact that Deepseek R1 was released three days /before/ Stargate means these guys stood in front of Trump and said they needed half a trillion dollars while they knew R1 was open source and trained for $5M.
Beautiful.
I've reached a critical point in my umpteenth attempt at playing through Assassin's Creed Odyssey—where the map starts to feel increasingly huge with all those map markers. This is usually where I quit. This time I've vowed to keep playing
To celebrate Madison Keys’ stunning run to the #AusOpen title—and a big Bounces Bounce™️—I’ve taken the paywall off this article from days ago about how Keys retooled herself into a Slam champion with a racquet switch in the off-season.
Enjoy!

I've been playing some God of War: Ragnarok since they added it to PS Plus Extra. But man, something just isn't right. The first game had my attention immediately, the combat was interesting with the hammer and when you eventually get into upgrading gear and get the full arsenal...what a game!
Ragnarok feels oddly familiar but at the same time like something I won't end up finishing. Wondering if I shouldn't finish Control first then come back to it🤔
Sasha Zverev told that Aussie crowd to shut the hell up about booing someone who's "given everything to this sport" - talking about Novak Djokovics semifinal retirement #AustralianOpen 🎾🥎
Booing a world-class tennis legend because of an injury is just the absolute worst kind of behavior from a sports "fan". Absolutely unacceptable #AusOpen
Can someone explain the purpose of the Netflix Jerry Springer documentary to me please? Like all I learned in two episodes was that the show was controversial, which I kinda already knew.
"Don't mess with the Amazing Spider-Man!"
The Advanced Suit 2.0 from Marvel's Spider-Man 2 comes to Marvel Rivals. Unlock this costume in-store on January 30, the same day Marvel's Spider-Man 2 comes to PC 🕷️
remarkable to me that far from seeming cool or masculine zuck seems like an even bigger loser — the kind of nerd who preemptively gives his lunch money to the bully and thanks him for the opportunity
"One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn't require religion at all."

Trying to get platinum on Spiderman: Miles Morales has reignited my love for gaming. I've been so focused on MP that I've forgotten what it's like to play good, single-player, narrative-driven games. Cyberpunk is next on the list, then might try Doom Eternal. I hear it's good
so....Activision is now incentivizing people to buy each Season of Black Ops 6 BlackCell by giving you extra XP boosts for every season you buy the BlackCell.
If you buy every single BlackCell, you'll be at a +50% XP Bonus for Season 06.
Those who have finished #DeathStranding: any tips for getting past the first act? I've started the game for the 7th time now and find I keep walking away from it very soon. I've heard it gets better but how do I get to that point?
me: why is there only one set of footprints
Jesus: i can fly check it out
(Jesus flies around)
me:
(Jesus lands)
Jesus: anyway you were saying something about your cancer
Had #BlackOps6 Zombies bomb out on me twice last night, where I'd just lose connection to the server near round 6 or 7. It seemed fine this morning. My internet had no issues on both occasions
Stephen Fry's Mythos is an absolute gem of a book. I'm #currentlylistening to the audiobook version which is in Fry's own voice and, my god(s), what a delight
Finished Vance's Hillbilly Elegy over the weekend. I read it because someone recommended it as a way to gain insight into the thinking behind the then-possible re-election of Trump (we all know how that ended). Did I enjoy it? It wasn't the best thing I'd read in '24 but not the worst either
