Not all nuclei are the same. We went to some of biology’s most exceptional nuclei 👉 dinoflagellates with genomes 80× ours 👉 Giardia’s twin nuclei 👉 ciliates carrying two nuclei in one cytoplasm & asked a simple question: what sets nuclear density? 🧵 Preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

I absolutely adore sending our papers to @reviewcommons.org!

We have published 3 papers through @reviewcommons.org The most notable difference was always how the manuscripts were evaluated for what they were rather than for the journal in which they were eventually published. That's simply how peer review should be!

First published teamwork of the lab 🎉! We wrote a review about emerging concepts of how metabolism promotes, regulates and changes during gastrulation. We hope it will be useful for anyone interested in the emerging field of developmental metabolism. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Just approved an order for standard lab consumables. Prices have nearly doubled since starting the lab. Meanwhile, the bar for publishing keeps rising, requiring ever more costly experiments, while grant budgets barely changed. Hard to see how this is a sustainable trajectory for academic research.

Annual killifish continue to surprise us: they make neutrophils before almost every other cell type, even before gastrulation. Neutrophils usually arise from the lateral plate mesoderm (forming in cyan), but in killifish they are already patrolling around the embryo in gold. tinyurl.com/killiphil
