The software that comes with 3D printers really puts the software that comes with regular printers into perspective. Just how minimum-viable it is, how hostile the companies are to users. Something like Bambu Handy coming with a Canon or HP is inconceivable. They'd have to hire another developer.

The hidden agenda here is human plagiarism. Endemic in academia and they all know they're going to get caught as soon as anyone takes an interest in them.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

Interesting anecdote about William Gibson opposing Autodesk effort to register "Cyberspace" as a trademark. Most fascinating part is Autodesk, a billion-dollar company, thinking it was the street finding its own use for a thing. colo.to/cyberspace.h...

colo.toWilliam Gibson and the trademarking of Cyberspace™Autodesk did trademark cyberspace, and William Gibson did get mad. But the story that Gibson retaliated by trademarking Eric Gullichsen was a prank by Timothy Leary.

Why aren't news and tech media actually covering Cringely/Stevens' death or career? Just Gruber and Boing Boing (ie me) in Google News. I suspected death was a hoax (not necessarily him, he has haters) but he was a foundational figure in modern tech reportage.

Pangram can be 100% correct but there are many ways your accusation might still be 100% libelous. I keep reading "by AI" or "is AI" or some other painfully specific statement of fact, and the justification is Pangram and vibes, and I scream like the cameraman in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

I suspect that Pangram is used in some stories as superficial parallel reconstruction for more telling, undisclosed evidence.

Fascinating how dead sea skincare product quality declined after they figured out how to prevent chargebacks. A variant of enshittification where the removal of legal risk at the selling end removes the need for quality at the supply end. www.npr.org/2026/10/14/n...

I looked it up and the "cash strapped police department" this story is a Sheriff's department has a $96.5m annual budget in a county of 600k people with a crime rate similar to antarctica

The $96.5m law enforcement budget is higher than $93m budget for infrastructure and public facilities; $10.7m for senior, veteran, and human services; $28m for roads; $21m for social services; $10m for parks and rec; $4m for transportation. "Cash strapped police departments"

It's genuinely weird and interesting that people will use an LLM to make an exact copy of a game, put it online without so much as changing the name or the assets, say "game over game industry" or somesuch, yet not realize that all they did was garden-variety piracy with 5 million extra steps.

It's just going to get taken down and one of them will be made an example of like "hackers" realizing half the world's banks could be owned with URL parameter increments in 2008.

AI has robbed us of the joy of painting ultramassive black holes into thrift store reproductions of 19th century landscape paintings

Q: Are people not having children because of the cost of living, unaffordable housing and employment precarity concurrent with runaway income inequality, wealth concentration and growing acceptance of impending climate catastrophe? Financial Times: no it is because of the homosexuality and jazz

Maybe a good example of a "not recovered since covid" chart where covid might just be hiding a trend that was already going therre

Searched "javascript canvas to minimal app distribution" and got a useful answer ("skip electron, use tauri or mystral") but one follow-up Q later and it's suggeting I feed it the js so it can port it to rust. Of course MMAcevedo turns out to be a hacker news guy.
