I live in San Francisco with my husband and two kids. I actually do the thing I went to school for. I wear my politics on my sleeve. She/her

I’m not a good photographer but I took these photos at a local Safeway the other day. Trying to make a point to live in the present and appreciate small things like readily available fresh, nutritious groceries. Trying to hold the good close because I don’t know how much longer we’ll have it 😕

My heart goes out to those impacted by the terrifying winter storm encroaching on huge swaths of the US this weekend, as well as to those whose cities have been invaded by our lawless, fascistic, murderous federal government.

You don’t have to want kids or even enjoy being around them. But it’s also worth unpacking why kids simply existing, learning, or having unmet needs reads as “annoying,” “unlikeable,” or “bad behavior.” This collective discomfort with noise, need, & vulnerability is why many ADULTS are struggling.

GUESS WHAT I GET TO DO TOMORROW CMON GUESS THAT’S RIGHT I HAVE JURY DUTY ON XMAS EVE SOME PROSECUTOR TRYING TO STRONGARM A DEFENDANT INTO A PUNITIVE PLEA DEAL IS GONNA GET TO HEAR MY MONOLOGUE ABOUT WHY JURY NULLIFICATION IS A CORNERSTONE OF DEMOCRACY IF THEY CALL MY NUMBER TRY ME JUST TRY ME

Five is *challenging* but also sometimes amazing. This morning, while heading to the car for preschool, Josie was asking if there is a Santa on the moon because she was concerned that all of the kids on the moon need presents too. October-December are seriously the best months to be a parent.

So how’d bending the knee work out for ya, Jeff?

Leaked memo from Amazon that warns existing H1B holders to avoid travel back into the USA after the September 21st deadline - their lawyers evaluated the new executive order as not just affecting new applications

Curious if others have had noticeably different experiences re-entering the US - meaning as compared even to just last month. Because … yikes y’all. Legit wondering if maybe now’s the time 😬

Someone help me out here, I feel like there must be some subtle similarity between all three of the cities where Trump has been sending National Guard troops, can’t quite put my finger on it what could it be…

This coverage of Charlie Kirk is absurd. As a veteran, peacenik, anti-gun nut, and proud liberal, I do not advocate violence of any kind. Kirk used his politics as a weapon, and aimed to hurt innocent people. I am not celebrating his death, but I am lamenting the demise of truth in this country.

Some mornings I wake up and try to plan out my day, which things I have to prioritize, which meetings I have, etc. Other mornings I wake up and read the words “US Attorney Pirro” and just reach for the whiskey because fuck this timeline 🫠

"We've spent a lot of money on the military and now they have nothing to do so we might as well let the president use it domestically to satisfy his own petty grudges" is precisely why the Founders feared a standing army. I mean, it's pretty much fucking verbatim.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Comer: "We're gonna support doing this in other cities if it works out in Washington DC. We spend a lot on our military. Our military has been in many countries around the world for the past two decades walking the streets trying to reduce crime. We need to focus on the big cities in America now."

The kids were too tired and bored to march, but I’m proud of them for making signs and holding them up and being part of a historic moment. Hopefully one that’s in a footnote to a story of how people stemmed the tide of fascism, rather than to a story about the American third reich. #nokings

A thing I actually said tonight to my nearly 8-year-old child: “when you comport yourself favorably around others, others are drawn to you. Does that make sense?” She, nodding sagely: “yeah. I mean, a little.” Reader, I’m not sure *I* entirely followed myself.

This morning our four-year-old burst into our room saying “Surprise! It’s Easter Egg Day!” And I feel like our irreligious parenting style is yielding predictable results.

WHO COULD HAVE PREDICTED THIS

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Many conservatives who fought against cancel culture on college campuses and championed free speech are now behind a growing crackdown on political expression at universities, in ways that try to sidestep the Constitution’s free-speech guarantees.

I’m at lunch with the family & (as always) before I’m even halfway through my meal my children have encroached so thoroughly into my space that I don’t have room to feed myself. I rhetorically ask: “do I have a gravitational pull or something” and OH MY GOD NOW I KNOW WHY THEY CALL IT “MOTHER” EARTH

Between this and the tariffs on Mexico (from whom the US gets a huge percentage of its food), later this year complaints about the price of eggs will seem quaint.

Peter Gleick@petergleick.bsky.social

For a photo op & a bragging media post, Trump minions at the USACoE have thrown away millions of gals of #water farmers were relying on for later this year. This water will not be captured, will not be useful for cities or farms or firefighting. It is now lost. www.latimes.com/environment/...

At this point I no longer even bother giving Republicans any suspension of disbelief so I am immediately going down the “incompetence or planned” rabbit hole about this crash over Reagan and now @quinnypig.com and I are teaching our 7-year-old about how the Nazis rose to power how’s your night going

Kicking off a long weekend of sober reflection as we prepare to bid adieu to American democracy as we know it 😢

Oh gee look at that it’s like the Twitter Files except actual reality instead of hyperbolic whining. I hate this timeline.

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

Had to vent some frustration that the same week Zuck whined about how the Biden admin sent some mean emails and that was so unfair, he was literally going over his policy changes with Trump aides to make sure they were cool with it, and that gets no headlines. www.techdirt.com/2025/01/17/a...

So tonight @quinnypig.com rapidly veered from “psh I can help with 2nd grade homework no problem” to “what the hell is a VCe” (I don’t know what this is) and I teased him and his response was “look I don’t know 2nd grade terms of art” and I feel like I need to ban business lingo in our house now.

Poking around Bluesky this morning has made me realize I live in more of a bubble than I thought. To me it is basic common sense that disasters are bad and decent humans should have compassion for people affected by a disaster no matter where they live. This skeet is not about the LA fires.

Audibly said “oh SHIT” when this alert popped up on my phone and now my kids are asking what’s wrong. FUCK. Sending all my love to LA right now. I genuinely love that city and its people so so much 😞

So @quinnypig.com recently went diving in Cozumel and acquired new headwear from a souvenir store near where he was staying. He is now displaying it on this. If anyone was thinking about getting me a holiday gift and not sure what to get, it’s booze. You can get me booze.

And yes, literally every billionaire. Every single one. When they give away enough money that they are no longer billionaires, we can talk about maybe other things we can trust them with.
