We Need a Revolution in Professional Learning   In this new paper by Professors Stuart Kime and Rob Coe they make the case for a different approach: one that protects time, builds expertise and looks carefully at whether professional learning is improving practice. Download here 👇 buff.ly/PI6sE1W

We had 10 minutes before the news and settled on watching Peter Simon (off of Double Dare) selling leather jackets on Ideal World. Oof.

I had a very sensible conversation with one of my Yr11s on this topic recently (he's doing 'death'). We discussed how Derby Museum presents an open discussion and cross cultural conversation about the mummified remains they have on display, behind multiple screens. A really good example.

After the Budget, millions will use online tax calculators. But there's a privacy catch: we tested the seven most popular, and every one sends your income to a server. Here's what MoneySavingExpert sends:

People seem to be debating homework. I decided the other day I'm going to set my Yr11s homework to find some more tracks for the #PowerBalladWednesday playlist. A fine use of homework, I'm sure we can all agree.

We have jobs. A newly created Pupil Welfare Lead, my replacement as Headteacher and Classroom Support Officers (TAs). If you want to work in a school that thinks hard about complex things and then delivers for the pupils their families and the staff who work with them, then take a look. 👇

lnkd.inVacancies - Frank Wise School | Simon KnightSomewhat unusually, we are currently advertising a number of jobs, including for a Pupil Welfare Lead, which is an exciting opportunity to join the Senior Leadership Team in a newly created role. Ther...

Favourites from our second day of Biennale include these monumental hanging canvases by Kaloki Nayami, Lebanon's starfish and India's everything. There's been a lot of walking today.

Got some good #SaintSpotting done today at Gallerie dell'Accademia. All the usual gang - St Francis with his stigmata, St Peter with his bunch of keys, St Jerome with his lion and a sneaky skull - but got some of the faves too...

A nice example of St Roch complete with cockleshell and showing off his leggy plague spot, a bit of St Lucy with her eyes on a plate, and we saw St Barbara carrying her three windowed tower (but I didn't take a photo of her 😔, so have St Agatha with her breast in pincers from the other day).

I'm suffering the pain of Sky News reporting on preparing for doom being scaremongering, followed by PHP doom (via a ton of misunderstanding), all by someone who seems to have rolled in off the street to talk about it. This is where people get their actual news 🤯

Today was my first taste of Venice Biennale. Loved Spain, loved Sweden, loved Poland, Greece had been to Cyberdog in Camden, and the Central Pavilion was full of treasure. More tomorrow.

If you've got a chance to get over to Derby and see this, do. I genuinely believe it's even better than the National Gallery stint - Orrery more prominent, a broader audience, better flow, families catered for and strong connection to the city's collection 🥰

It's your last chance to see the free show of Joseph Wright's candlelight paintings at Derby Museum & Art Gallery, closing Nov 1. We saw it at the National Gallery last year: art-exhibitions.blogspot.com/2025/11/a-me.... Pictured: An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, 1768, National Gallery.

I’ve written a book about building belonging in schools! It’s called Building Belonging in Schools! I argue that 1. kids feeling belonging is important just because But 2. If we want them to really learn lots, for rigour to be high, then they need to feel secure in their class. Preorder now!

This would be an excellent volunteer role for someone London-based 💙

Today we went along a river, got stuck waiting in traffic, accidentally found ourselves on a gondola and spotted a late night Titian.

I am consiering retraining as a secondary maths teacher. Have any other primary teachers made the same transition? I am aware of the NCETM route but wanted to know how realistic it is. RTs appreciated, especially if have a network involved in teaching.

Yesterday was all about Giotto 🎨 We went to the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua twice to see his frescos - once during the day (to do the museum as well) and again at night (because we're cool).

In fresco, colours can’t be blended and reworked as freely as in modern painting. Each shade must be separately prepared and applied to wet plaster before it dries. Look at how he's used subtle gradations to create light, shadow and depth 🥰

These were high on my list to see in person and haven't disappointed despite the nanoseconds you get inside 😁 700 years and a moment when art changed. That's pretty good. Also, worth going at night too - you almost get it to yourselves.

Giotto is often seen as a forerunner of the Italian Renaissance, changing the course of Western art, moving away from the flat, stylised figures of medieval art to a more naturalistic style.

The Scrovegni Chapel frescos (1303-1305) tell the stories of the Virgin Mary and Jesus, in scenes that fill the walls. His ability to capture full on human emotion, expressive gestures and three-dimensional space is 🤯 - this wasn't a _thing_ in 1300.

In this week's climate change watch, the clematis has flowered. A self-seeded offshoot rather than the whole thing, but flowered.

BBC Breakfast item on repairing stuff not chucking it: "There are people who don't know how to sew on a button, which isn't their fault, we just don't teach that in schools anymore". Is that where people traditionally learnt that? Was it not just a home thing?

“Everybody’s dead, Dave.” “Edward the Confessor’s dead?” “Everybody’s dead, Dave.” “What about Harald Hardrada?” “He’s dead, Dave. Everybody’s dead, Dave.” “Not King Harold?” “Yes, Dave. King Harold’s dead, Dave. Everybody is dead, Dave.”

Teacher Tapp did that thing where they ask about a percentage of pupils in my last class and I'm having to think about a class of two.

Foppish young man, distracted by old woman reading his palm, has his purse stolen by woman at L (with long-haired woman cupping her hand to receive it) / as the pale woman at rear cuts gold medal from his chain (Georges de La Tour, Fortune-Teller, 1630)

Also enjoying the local news juxtaposition of today's Harry and Meghan Nottingham-love coverage with yesterday's Visit East Midlands vox pop lady referring to the city as 'scuzzy' when asked about it's tourism potential 🤣

Today had a bit of a post Ofsted vibe (although I'd hoped now they've been, people would stop calling them 'The O-word', but, no). A montage, a fairly giddy Principal and one boy singing 'Ofsted aren't here anymore' outside my window followed by 'bet you're buzzing Miss' we're particular highlights.

What a charming #Egyptian bronze figure of a shrew! Since shrews are animals that find their way in the dark they were connected to the descending phase of the sun’s nocturnal journey. Late Period (746-332 B.C). On display at Museum Hohentübingen. 📷️ me

We did manage to work around me being in with inspectors during some of Yr11 and have #PowerBalladWednesday though. Today was Enrique Iglesias, Hero. Went down well. Also, turns out we're going to have Whitney, I have Nothing every week as a bonus because we make the rules 💪

Well it's been an intense couple of days. I'm in this strange position where I'm not leadership leadership, but in my trust role I work very closely with those who are. I've had a couple of slots with the inspectors, but mostly I've just seen people who are really very tired.
