It was a real privilege to be part of the 'Locating Loss' conference earlier this year, where speakers shared work on infertility in historic contexts as well as work in the creative arts and healthcare contexts. These conversations were recorded and you can listen to the podcast in the link below:

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day is marked around the world on 15th October. I'm very glad to be able to contribute to this important day by sharing the podcasts from Locating Loss: Histories of Infertility conference @unioflimerick.bsky.social in May 2026. soundcloud.com/real-smart-m...

We discussed the myths surrounding enslaved people's emotion, enslaved people's resistance, our emotion in the archive, and the ethics of this work. If you're interested in the book, please take a listen.

It explores how enslaved people formed their own, gendered emotional frameworks to both refuse and survive the institution of slavery. It also considers how enslaved and formerly enslaved people spoke to different aspects of their emotional worlds in written, oral and visual testimony.

This was such a brilliant conference. I learnt so much about histories of infertility, about how to locate these histories, and about how to communicate this work creatively. So many thoughts for my new project! Thanks so much for having me @niamhroisin.bsky.social

What a day at the Locating Loss: histories of infertility in landscapes and spaces conference - still just taking it all in but just the most extraordinary research & work shared by scholars, curators, professionals. Such a profound experience - GRMA Ó chroí to all

We ran numerous workshops with young people, including students and young mothers about the barriers they face in life and their hopes for the future. They told us how they believe the barriers they face can be broken, and emphasised that they wanted their voices heard.

Really looking forward to being part of this Locating Loss conference in May, speaking on a roundtable about my new project on slavery and infertility. @niamhroisin.bsky.social 's project is brilliant, bringing together historians, health professionals and others to consider spaces of loss.

Niamh NicGhabhann Coleman@niamhroisin.bsky.social

It is National Infertility Awareness week - a week to acknowledge the impact of infertility on millions of people around the world. An appropriate time to share the programme for the Locating Loss conference, which will take place @unioflimerick.bsky.social on 27 May

The problem when I graduated was that there were 200 modern British history PhDs putting in applications for every job, you had to apply for like 50 jobs to get one, and a fair few people left academia before they did. That was unpleasant in its own way, but it wasn’t a death spiral like it is now.

Richard Carr@richardcarr.bsky.social

There are currently 6 permanent full time history jobs in the whole UK. 500+ PhDs being produced a year - not all of whom will want to pursue an academic year but likely most, and of course years will stack up onto each other. What a sector.

Thrilled/nervous to be taking over as Chair of BrANCH (@branchuk.bsky.social) from October. Emily has left some enormous shoes to fill (figuratively...), but this is the first organization I joined back in the mists of PhD time, and it's an enormous honor to step up here. www.branch.org.uk

branch.org.ukBritish American Nineteenth American Historians (BrANCH)BrANCH, the association of British American Nineteen Century Historians, is a UK-based group of historians interested in US history across the long nineteenth-century.

I was lucky enough to work in the Department of American Studies at Nottingham for a year, and as Emily says, it is a dynamic and welcoming community providing students with a really important alternative to a history degree. Please sign this!

Emily Brady@emilybrady.bsky.social

I am heartbroken and horrified that the department where I received my PhD is under threat of closure. This is a dynamic and welcoming community that is at the forefront of American Studies in the UK. I encourage everyone to sign the below petition and rally behind our colleagues in Nottingham.

The book explores how enslaved people formed their own, gendered emotional frameworks to both refuse and survive the institution of slavery. It also considers how enslaved and formerly enslaved people spoke to different aspects of their emotional worlds in written, oral and visual testimony.
