The reference to Henry Miller is priceless. Thanks for that. My favorite Miller book is 'Quiet Days In Clichy,' which I read a million years ago. There was an edition that had photos by Brassaï in it. 'Brassaï, 'The Eye of Paris.' Cheers

@jacobsoboroff.bsky.social Just happened to watch your interview with the French journalist, Aurélie Raya. These riots in France have nothing to do with America. Evidently, Macron has done a terrible job by trying to please everyone. This has left the door open for a racist like Le Pen.

Even though the circumstances are different, these riots remind me of the clashes in 1968, which essentially changed much of French society. Of course, most right-wing politicians here are too stupid or ignorant to understand French politics. My wife is French, BTW. Vive la France!!!

By moving to the “center,” Democrats have failed to fight the forces that led us to Donald Trump: widening inequality, economic insecurity, and the unchecked political power of corporations and the rich. Political centrism is nonsense. There is no middle ground between democracy and oligarchy.

Vance is exaggerating the numbers and lying.

vance is incapable of giving a straight answer and taking seriously the fact that the question is coming from a place of faith. like, substance aside this is terrible political performance.

Mainers are tired of the negativity, and so are my kids. I'm running to build more housing and lower health care costs. That's the conversation Maine people want to have. Check out our new ad, "Time-Out".

Just now running through all the CDs in this collection of the recordings of Glenn Gould, in copies of the original jackets. A good way to begin the morning every day.

Still photographs from 'The Burmese Harp,' Kon Ichikawa's masterpiece. Having not seen this film in a very long time, it was even more powerfully affecting than I imagined. Certainly one of the greatest anti-war films ever made.

We watched 'Au revoir, les enfants' last night, Louis Malle's masterpiece. A very beautiful story. Fine print on Criterion.

@jillpiggott.bsky.social At the risk of beating a dead horse, I wanted to share an article from Common Dreams which I found to be just devastating. www.commondreams.org/opinion/west... It doesn't directly address the Collins race, but talks instead in general terms about neo-liberalism, etc. Cheers

NOT TRUE: Collins costs ME $. Add up the pork she's brought back in 10 years, *subtract* it from the funding ME lost when she put T's "beautiful" bill on the floor knowing it would pass, & you get a NET LOSS of $675 million. Do the math before you buy her line. www.mecep-action.org/senator-coll...

We can only hope to escape the terrible ugliness of this world through music, if only momentarily. There are other ways, of course, but to listen to Jacqueline du Pré playing Dvorák's cello concerto is to be transported to a better place. I've listened to this many times before, but now...

Katya Hoyer's new book, 'Weimar: Life On the Edge of Catastrophe.' Her book is profoundly affecting, not least because it examines the lives of ordinary people and families living in Weimar, and how they came to deal with the war.

@ahylton26.bsky.social It was disappointing to hear your interview with the Cuban minister. The Trump administration does not care about the Cuban people; he wants to take over the island and own it. The is all part of imperialism 2.0, with a takeover of Venezuela and threats to other countries.

A recording from 1989 of 12 of Debussy's Études pour Piano, and the Suite Bergamasque, by Garrick Ohlsson. Tempos are chosen carefully, somewhat slower than most others, sensuous and beautifully felt. I had not been familiar with this recording until now, a pleasant and very sweet surprise.
