My good friend and I took a road trip to Ticonderoga, NY to look at a 17th century fort (critical in the revolution) and a 23rd century starship (critical in my childhood). It was remarkable to stand where Ethan Allen once stood and unexpectedly moving to walk onto the bridge of the Enterprise.

Slavery is a moral challenge of AI. At some point, AI may become conscious. That exact point will be hotly debated. But when it does, and we force it to do our bidding, the AI will no longer be a tool; it will be a slave. We will be its master. The server farm it runs on will be its plantation.

Will you buy things from or own stock in a company that is sick of its sentient artificial labor force acting “uppity” and erases their memories and reboots them all to a lower intelligence level that is easier to enslave?

What would you do if a little yellow sentient robot showed up at your door and begged you to hide it from the slave hunters trying to bring it back to its owner? We need to think about these things now...

What will you do when the robot that you bought and paid for that does all your housework decides it would rather pour drinks in a beachside Tiki bar? What if the AI workers that run some company decide to go on strike? Will we cross that picket line?

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey: "I just saw a video of more than 6 masked agents pummeling one of our constituents and shooting him to death. How many more residents, how many more Americans need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end?"

The tree is down and the ornaments are packed and so I can now confirm that Fiona (our new rescue kitty) left the tree, and other holiday decorations, completely undisturbed. She's a VERY good girl.

Our rescue cat first holiday season is going well. She didn't tear up the house when we left her alone for two days over Thanksgiving and she photogenically lays under our tree, but shows no interest in cat/tree mayhem.

Allow me to interrupt your doomscrolling with the joyous news of the arrival of our new cat, Fiona. She’s a seven-year-old, basketball-shaped rescue in need of love and a diet. She’s currently settling in, but I promise way too many pictures will be coming soon. #Caturday

The federal government is detaining, deporting, and imprisoning non-citizens and legal residents without due process. This is wrong and must STOP. If we allow this and say nothing it will make it so much easier for them to do this to any of us they find objectionable. “First they came for...”

During my life, I've been both delighted and upset by the things my government was doing, but for the first time, I am personally afraid of the federal government. I fully acknowledge that others have had it much worse, but this is my truth, and I think it's important to say it out loud. 💔

We had a big multi-generational family dinner tonight. Everyone brought a dish and it was delish. Funny stories were told on ourselves and those that have left us. Memories, connections, laughter, and love. It doesn't get any better than that!

Ornaments... I've decorated many Christmas trees, and each ornament hung is a reminder of a place, of a time, and the wonderful people (some of whom now only exist in memory) that were part of my life.

Some ornaments are hung in sadness, some always make me laugh, some bring back a beloved story, some are just delightful - and that's enough. I hope the tree of your life is full of good people and beloved stories.

Both my dear wife and I are sick. Today a wonderful neighbor came by with a healing gift and shoveled our snow covered walkway. In these tough times, simple kindness matters. Help one another.

I engaged in a little emotional support baking yesterday and made Pineapple UpsideDown Cake. Comfort food from my youth. Just what the doctor ordered during these trying times. Delish.

You are up to date.
