Not surprised Telus is awful. We still have an active complaint filed against them with the federal regulator. That’s how bad their billing practices were with us.

Stephen Smith πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦@smist08.bsky.social

No. Got rid of it, only getting spam calls and Telus kept silently raising the price, which they’d put down again if called, but too annoying to continue. Have MeshCore and ham radios for emergencies. Also lots of battery backups.

TODAY IN CANADA: In 1887, Saskatchewan's first telephone exchange (not pictured) opened in a bookstore in Regina, transforming communication across the Canadian Prairies. ☎YOUR SAY: Do you still have a landline? Why or why not?

If the B.C. election result stings for you tonight, remember that this province once forced a majority government to back down on a tax it had just brought in. A new government still answers to the same people who hired it.

An election worker at the #Nanaimo Golf Club voting location says it’s been quiet all morning. Don’t let the rain or apathy keep you home. Don’t take this Canadian right for granted. Don’t let the boomers decide who’s elected. They’re all voting today. Get out there and vote!!!

TODAY IN CANADA: In 1980 The Globe and Mail printed its first national edition using satellite communications to do so. It was this first Canadian newspaper to use this technology. πŸ“°YOUR SAY: Did you ever cut out a newspaper story and keep it? What was it about?

Jocelyn and I just saw You Can See Everything. I’ve never seen a documentary quite like it. Three hours long, and keeps you riveted every minute of it. And yes, you’ll be talking about it for days.

TODAY IN CANADA: Brian Bowman became the first Indigenous mayor of Winnipeg, Manitoba, when he was elected in 2014. 🍁YOUR SAY: What was the first moment you saw someone "like you" in a position of power?

UPDATE: He is back home!! He got out at about 2am, made it four blocks away, and parked himself at a neighbour’s house all morning. She posted in a local β€œlost pets” Facebook group…

…and a bunch of people told her he looked like Otis. So we have him now, he’s grounded for life, and I’m going to take a couple of days off. Thank you all for the help and advice! ❀️

TODAY IN CANADA:In 1911, the Royal Mint in England shipped the master dies for Canada's proposed new silver dollar to Ottawa; because the traditional Latin phrase "Dei Gratia" was left off the coin, only 3 were made. YOUR SAY: We’ve eliminated the penny should we eliminate the nickel and dime next?

I feel like I’m more invested in that Kelowna candidate who seemed like he really didn’t want to run at all. I keep refreshing to see if he got a seat πŸ˜‚ #bcelections

I read the Canada Gazette so you don’t have to πŸ™‚ β€” Banks can't do any significant side hustle β€” They still can’t lease you a car β€” Political candidates get most security costs repaid β€” The EU’s bank wants Canada to rule it isn’t β€œforeign” ...and more! βœ… My free newsletter: join.farandwide.news

TODAY IN CANADA: On today's date in 1841, Queen's University in Kingston received its royal charter. Oddly, the charter required the college stay within three miles of a specific Presbyterian church. πŸŽ“οΈ YOUR SAY: Should post-secondary education be paid for by the government?

America: Meddling in Canadian Elections Since 1962

youtube.comAmerica: Meddling in Canadian Elections Since 1962The U.S. is complaining about Canadian influence on American elections. It's a joke. Here's a documented and sourced list of times the United States put their thumb on ours. WHAT I COVER IN THIS VIDEO - Alberta separatists met U.S. State Department officials three times in 2025, and reportedly discussed oil royalties, fresh water and railway land access - Trump saying he would rather deal with a Liberal, then posting to Canadians on election day in 2025 - Obama endorsing Justin Trudeau in 2019 and again in 2021 - The 2005 speech by U.S. ambassador David Wilkins in the middle of a federal campaign - Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter weighing in on Quebec separatism - Kennedy, Diefenbaker and the 1962 and 1963 elections: a pollster with a fake passport, a State Department press release and a forged letter - Trump's endorsements in Colombia, Hungary, Poland and Honduras, his aid threat to Argentina, and the U.S. capture of Venezuela's president Canadian sovereignty is not a bargaining chip. niemanlab.orgMeta’s new commercial terms will allow the scraping of news sites, legal experts say | Nieman Journalism LabMeta can use web scrapers to crawl and collect content from websites β€œassociated with” business accounts on its platforms, according to its new commercial terms of use.
The update, set to go into effect on October 30, will include news publishers with business accounts. These accounts allow companies or public figures to manage Facebook pages, Messenger accounts, Instagram profiles, or WhatsApp channels from one place. While journalism isn’t the only industry that will be affected by this update, virtually every news organization has at least one Meta business account, including Nieman Lab.
The new terms broadly cover business accounts that manage pages and groups, run advertisements, push marketing messages, and use the platform’s business account dashboard. As written, the new terms could be used to argue that Meta can scrape content from news sites and use that content to train the company’s AI products, according to three legal experts who reviewed the terms at Nieman Lab’s request.
β€œThis is a remarkable provision to bury in [the] terms of service, given that this would give Meta access to material that would likely cost many millions of dollars in a licensing market,” said Matt Topic, a media and intellectual property attorney at Loevy & Loevy. β€œIt’s not clear whether a court would enforce this, but publishers should assume that it would be enforceable.”
In early October, Meta alerted users to the update in a blog post and on the Meta Business Suite. The updated terms explicitly state that Meta can use the content it collects from associated websites to β€œtrain” Meta products. Elsewhere in its terms of service, the company defines β€œAI at Meta” as one of those products.
Here’s the new language about scraping in full:
You authorize us (or any entity acting on our behalf) to use automated software (such as web scrapers, bots, robots, spiders, crawlers, and user agents) and create test credentials to access, index, cache, analyze, collect, retrieve, or crawl the domains, web pages, or URLs (and any content available through them) that are associated with your products or services, or that are made available through your or users’ use of Meta Company Products and services, and to periodically pull updates from such domains, web pages, or URLs. Meta may use any content from such domains, web pages, or URLs to provide, develop, improve, research, train, and maintain the integrity of, the Meta Company Products, services, and features provided under these Commercial …
