i really wish more people could tell the difference between a balatro and an arcade roguelike, because one has an awesome ability to be in tune with the spirit of arcade games of the past and the other very much does not

i guess overall i hear a lot of people go "ugh another fucking roguelite" but i think the roguelite is kinda the best place for a lot of old arcade gameplay to move to in this era, because all it has to be is "we added a little bit of randomness to shake things up" and that's a good thing!

but you gotta, you GOTTA know when to cut back and NOT add stuff. you are not gonna make the first good shmup roguelike by making a bunch of cool abilities. you are going to make it by studying bullet patterns from the greats and making a GOOD SHMUP and then adding little bits of variation.

meanwhile, on the balatro side, if all you're doing is rigging odds for or against yourself? buddy you better have the best, most perfect complicated presentation possible with 2000 synergies and things that can happen. that's all your game is. you better balance it perfectly

meanwhile, your balatro-likes don't really have any base skill challenge gameplay. they're pure statistical games, just rigging the odds for or against yourself, deciding when to push. which are also really fun, but a very, very different kind of fun

if you're making the first kind, you really, really want to make something that emphasizes your gameplay first and foremost! i see so many of these fail cause they think having cool guns or abilities will save them; no, you need good gameplay!

there's a lot of roguelites that, when they say the term, mean "we added some random abilities and enemies to our skill based gameplay to mix it up a little" and those are awesome, and often can enhance the old school arcade genres they're playing with

friends: i need very, very specific music suggestions my younger sister likes music a lot, she's also a drummer. college age right now. she's also DEEP in the most conservative christian cult imaginable, the one i got out of

i need cool music with cool drums and girls, that's genuinely high quality, esp if it has a female drummer (EVEN BETTER IF THEY'RE GENDERWEIRD), but also ISN'T gonna have stuff that'll offend her or my parents, because anything i get her is gonna be seen as a threat.

My job? Oh I'm the guy who makes all the Generic Brand Products you see people compare their shit against in commercials. Yeah It's... It's been rough, I really thought we had something with those paper towels, but then they just fell apart. Really thought we could have been a contender.

dora is fun extra points. Don't even mention ura dora. Do that like game 5 or whenever it comes up. All the other yaku you can now mention, but remind them that these are all bonus points; the base ones are what they need to be allowed to score. Now they gotta combine yaku to get the biggest hand

and then u mention like seven pairs and what a yakuman is briefly as a joke and you're good and everyone now knows the basics of how to play and didn't get overwhelmed by having you start out by going "okay well first we need to explain how the wall works"

This game is just to reinforce "you need to find one of these to win". When the game ends, check which one they got, congratulate them on finding one, and then explain scoring; since that yaku is worth X han, they get Y points. Do not explain fu. Tell them fu is a mystery to us all.

This teaches them how scoring steals points from other players Third game: explain the esoterica. Furiten is an opportunity to reach them about watching discards; say the rule exists so other people can figure out what someone might need to win and not discord at.

game 2: limited yaku. Still no scoring, only goal is to GET one, because "you need one to win" Only explain the simplest ones; toitoi, straight, tanyao, dragons, the two wind triplets that matter, half/full flush and Most Importantly Riichi

Now you mention what an open hand is, and make it clear they riichi can only be done with a closed hand; and then you make it clear riichi can ALWAYS be done with a closed hand. So if they don't know what you they need, they just stay closed to riichi, that counts.

If you can, reach riichi; just say "if you haven't pon'd or chi'd u can do this for extra points" Teach kan if you have to, but try and avoid it

Every time I go by this building I go OKAY WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE TO YOU most people go "uhhh idk it's a building" But anyone who also went to MGM goes "oh fuck it's tower of terror" and I finally feel understood

Reviews of the games I played this week on stream! first up, KEY FAIRY, which is a delight start to finish. I can recommend this to anyone and i will do so because it made me so fuckin happy and warm. play it! backloggd.com/u/JuniperThe... store.steampowered.com/app/2878580/...

okay first step for speedrunning key fairy is done complete map of the game. now i just gotta plan out routes for any% and all endings

fun thing i did here: key fairy is a monochrome game with just black and white (well... mostly, :P ) but it lets you set color palettes in the menu you can unlock in game so, i used those colors as a vague key for my map so i can remember where stuff is! just switched before taking screenshots.

Your biggest impact on the internet? Heh. Hehehehe. Hehehehehehee. I can't talk about that one yet. Come back april 29th, 2031. Just fucking wait.

alright spent like 3 hours making a key fairy map. lets see if i can't make a route for this. key fairy, ftr, is one of my favorite little games this year. my number one pick for "how does this not have 100 reviews yet" store.steampowered.com/app/2878580/...
