Class reductionists dismissing analysis of systemic oppression as bourgeoisie and liberal identitarians having zero interest in class analysis are both bad, but the former still can have interesting things to say whereas the latter mostly just undermines class consciousness.

Systemic oppression sets up people of the most marginalized identities for material deprivation, and ignoring that means bad class analysis. But caring about CEOs and extremely wealthy people being (x) identity or whatever almost certainly means you have little of value to say!

The conclusion I came to after many generative disagreements is that whether transmascs/trans men *can be* lesbians is irrelevant bc they already are included + centered across physical lesbian space over and above trans women, so it's up to them to uplift trans women/not perpetuate transmisogyny.

The thing we could find agreement on across all conversations (despite disagreements!) was that trans women don't have power to do much but be mean to guys online and that it's up to those guys to decide whether they're gonna perpetuate a legacy + culture of systemic transmisogyny. Period!

We need to start having more conversations this way, not "who is valid to identify as (x)?" but "what is actually happening in material space? who has the power? why is that, both historically and presently?" Then we maybe have the start of something worth talking about.

Consequently, it's not a problem when trans women don't trust transmascs/trans men identifying as lesbians bc of how it runs parallel to the historical and present exclusion / demonization of trans women in lesbian space + trans women have no power to meaningfully exclude them. Ball's in your court!

Getting tired of copy pasting the same earnest messages in response to those reading this in the worst possible faith—sometimes people are just really unhappy, angry, and scared and any suggestion that things could be different flips their lid. A problem only time can fix!

Notice how this fully anti-trans detransition therapy rhetoric is so functionally similar to the "you're valid no matter what, you don't have to transition to be trans" rhetoric that we have all inculcated ourselves to?

From your text, being impoverished is radically different in a country with such wretched and crumbling social safety nets. As someone who's partner + partner's family get Native Casino money that functions exactly like UBI, I've seen first hand how it radically changes material conditions!

If you don't get how 30k could radically change the material conditions of a huge percentage of people in a way that completely alters their entire life trajectory then your class position has totally alienated you from understanding what it's like to have even the barest adjacency to poverty.

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

I don't think $30k is a life-changing amount of money. Median American born in 1980 will have $2m in income in their lifetime. It's a 1% increase in earnings.

yes! the doomerism is so endlessly unhelpful and is always just a complete surrender to bioessentialism—the technology is right there for you to seize the means of production of your own body and the transsexuals you are demonizing are on the front lines fighting for you to have access to it!!

max graves@maximumgraves.bsky.social

also i keep seeing posts online from nb people going the other direction who really need to hear that their desired body is not "impossible" and what they're describing is actually just "estrogen but then you get top surgery. no for real they won't grow back"

I mean no, I was using an example to extrapolate about dominant cultural norms + mentalities across queer / trans space that I've seen play out over the decade since I transitioned, and which tons of others have come to me saying they've also been negatively effected in similar ways by

everyone objecting to the idea that ostensibly unobjectionable statements can reinforce an anti transition message seem perfectly comfortable reading a transmed or anti nb message into this post that are nowhere in the text

One of the worst things about the mindset I'm criticizing is that it often poses transitioning visibly as "binary" and not transitioning at all as "nonbinary", where in reality changing your sex in some way is the biggest violation of an immutable binary that exists, as nonbinary as it gets!

May “Bunny” Peterson 🦄@goddessblade.bsky.social

What I’d like to see acknowledged more is that transition IS a practical life choice for some noticeably GNC people and that those transitioners are still socially vulnerable minorities. I hate the ideological tone of this argument, as if the lives of people like this are mere props in a debate.

In all likelihood your body is producing hormones in a statistical range aligning with the gender you were assigned at birth, and as you continue to age that hormone profile will continue to change your body further down that direction. If you don't like the hormones your mom gave you, get your own!

You don't have to medically transition to be trans, I never said otherwise! However access to medical transition is the primary target of the anti-trans movement and if they have their way none of us would—not transitioning is what society encourages and pretending otherwise is anti-trans.

I think Bluesky siloed off a certain professional managerial class liberalism vibe from Twitter when it became ontologically evil, like the more scold-y impulses that had an important function in the larger ocean but when trapped in a closed ecosystem are mostly just obnoxious and self-righteous.

Twitter in comparison is a grotesque primordial soup that shouldn't be allowed to exist wherein you regularly encounter literal Nazis, but ironically the leftist / queer / trans subcultural corners that still exist there are more dynamic and interesting because it's still just a vastly bigger ocean.

good rule of thumb is that when anyone goes out of their way to insist that you don't have to do something which society already overwhelmingly stigmatizes and undermines, that person's real message is opposition to that thing even if they'd like to claim neutrality!

Before I started hormones, I worked at the dollar store. This Christian guy used to come in and tell me, when I was en femme, how God loves "strong young men" like me. I ran into him at a gas station the other day, jeans, tee, and no makeup. He held the door and called me "ma'am." Problem fixed!

Fondly remembering the first “trans affirming” therapist I had, an any/all pronouns cis woman who, when I brought up the steps I needed to take to access certain surgeries, immediately went into a spiel about how not wanting bottom surgery is totally valid and my body is perfect.

To be clear, I didn’t bring up feeling any sort of pressure to get surgeries or even the slightest bit of internal conflict! But her and a culture full of people like her is certainly the reason I delayed following up on certain things against my own best interest for years.

It should give us all pause that this “you’re valid no matter what” culture that tells us identity is just an internal vibe requiring no action, even to the point that medical transition is treated as something to be avoided if possible, is so similar to conversion therapy!

once again there is a huge overlap in the rhetorical tropes of ableism and the rhetorical tropes of old-school homophobia and the rhetorical tropes of anti-transness-- i think it's interesting how these all echo and feed off one other

The mythology of the changeling where a fairy replaces a baby with an identical but intangibly "wrong" copy is easily read as queer bc the phenomena of parents feeling like their child failing to live up to their idealized image is a murder/replacement is a tale as old as time!

Wild to watch China build up unbelievably futuristic infrastructure that produces more renewable energy than the rest of the world combined over just a few decades while the US is run into the ground as essentially a pump and dump scheme

Your mom and I are the same age. It's truly fucking depressing how little has changed in terms of the prevalence of sexual violence, the treatment of survivors, the deflection of causation, or how easily privileged guys just skate away to fail upwards.

Extremely dispiriting to see so much rhetoric acting like internet porn created sexual violence when you can talk to any woman in my mom’s generation born in the 60s and 70s and confirm that endemic sexual abuse was significantly more rampant and simply not talked about.

As for me, I was in high school and college in the late aughts and early teens and I promise you that the culture of shaming and silence was even worse then! The fact sexual violence is still so virulent today is a condemnation of so many aspects of society, but it is not new.

Okay did the math wrong and my mom was actually born in ‘62 so it’s closer to “my mom’s generation born from the 50s-70s”

The phenomenon of people pushing you into getting drunk and doing more drugs after you tried again and again to politely make it clear that you are not interested in something so that they can try to pressure you into acquiescing is not just a thing cis straight dudes do.
