Bats have long been associated with the spirit of Halloween, and no bat is more on theme than vibrant orange-and-black painted wooly bats. 🦇🎃 Yet the truly scary thing about them is how quickly their populations are declining — primarily due to being killed so their bodies can be used for decor. 🧵

Whether they're sold pinned in display cases or crammed into tiny fake coffins, painted woolly bats are collected from the wild to be killed, stuffed, and hung on walls thousands of miles from their homes. These animals are much more magnificent alive and thriving for generations to come. 🧵

Contractors came to southern Arizona this summer as part of the Trump administration’s project to build two parallel, 30-foot border walls through some of the most ecologically sensitive areas of the borderlands. When they arrived in the San Rafael, they ripped apart three ancient cottonwood trees.

We're back with a new season of our podcast, Sounds Wild. In this episode cohost Vanessa Barchfield takes us inside the community of activists who put their bodies on the line in the name of a giant tree they called a grandmother of the cottonwoods. This hormone-disrupting, cancer-linked chemical is the United States’ most widespread pesticide water pollutant. Yet the EPA wants to reapprove its use — without legally required water-quality standards — for another two decades.

The Tecopa bird’s beak, which grows in desert wetlands in Nevada and California, is threatened by groundwater pumping for mining, agriculture and energy development. Its vulnerable habitats could dry up if the species is not protected. More details below. ⬇️

The oil and gas industry is happy to privatize benefits and make the public - and the liveability of our communities - pay the cost.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

“The oil and gas industry says it’s a ‘good-faith’ partner eager to help craft regulations, but time and time again, it’s worked behind the scenes to delay and weaken them. As a result, the United States today emits more methane from its oil and gas sector than any other country in the world.”

More than 1,700 species of plants and animals are protected under the Act — with many more awaiting protections. These species shouldn't have to pay the ultimate price just so fossil fuel executives and special interests can line their pockets.

Congress introduced a permitting reform package: The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 aka #BAAJA S.5653 It's under the guise of helping renewable energy, but it's really a massive giveaway to the fossil fuel industry with a backroom deal that guts the Endangered Species Act.

The global fishing industry kills at least 1 trillion fish every year, even though it produces only about 1% of the world’s food. About half the fish it catches become feed for industrial animal operations, including aquatic ones 🔗⬇️

Despite being banned in more than 60 countries around the world, we still use so much #atrazine in the U.S. that over a quarter of our rivers and streams are contaminated with a carcinogen. We owe it to our kids and to ourselves to ban atrazine across the country once and for all.
