I am confident that Obama's remark was more about the appropriateness of a certain aesthetic (Cheesecake Factory) in a certain setting (the seat of the US executive) rather than a general assessment of it. Many people use "porn-tier acting" as an insult despite, well, you know.

The next Democratic Party administration should arrange for Petraeus to take up some sort of diplomatic or academic posting in Lugano, Switzerland. They should encourage him to co-write a book on women in sport, remind him he represents the dignity of the US government and hope for the best.

He should really write more on subjects that better leverage his expertise, like the art of fucking your enemy's wife

There's a certain type of guy who sort of knows about how the aircraft carrier ultimately became more important in surface combat than the battleship, definitely does not want to be the modern equivalent of the battleship dead-ender, and ends up backing the modern equivalent of the bomber Zeppelin.

Before you have a chance to enjoy your brief reprieve, the relative quiet is shattered by a series of clatters and roars. A half-dozen large objects are flying towards your position on parabolic arcs, tumbling and flipping as they go. "Are those... Cars?" Asks your 2IC.

The approaching cybertruck dragoons must cross a water obstacle to reach your position. The remaining cars bracket your position, landing too far away to cause casualties but close enough for the heat and smoke of the ensuing flames to impair visibility and fill the air with a toxic, caustic stench. You make a quick sitrep on the radio, describing the attack and asking for more info.

Infantry scouts and recon drones report no sign of any launcher capable of propelling such a large object into the air, and the vehicles themselves clearly couldn't fly. One of your riflemen reports seeing gigantic, spring-loaded and rocket-assisted legs falling from the cars during the attack.

The second vehicle falls well short, landing heavily 300m ahead of your position as its thrusters appear to malfunction. No doors open and no passengers can be seen moving inside, but your GPMG team fires a sustained burst into it anyway. The next few vehicles are more problematic.

One of the sleek, falling cars lands directly behind the ammo-bearer's position. It slams into the ground at terminal velocity, with no apparent attempt to slow down. One of your troops sustains burns and shrapnel injuries while preventing the flaming debris from igniting the stored ammunition.

The first vehicle suddenly begins spitting out jets of smoke, righting itself and slowing its flight path until it comes to a soft landing within 30m of one of your entrenched GPMG teams. A pair of visibly dizzy armed men stumble out the front doors, only to be immediately riddled with bullets.

This is sad. General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s historic World War II globe was broken when Pete Hegseth’s team dropped it while trying to move it into his office.

As a sort of follow-up on this, I think it would be fun to have an Hoi-type game where the only way to unlock reasonably achievable war goals for Germany was to kill Hitler, but to put yourself in a position to succeed at this you had to play the political game, and play pretty close to the wire.

Birb_at_Arms@birblib.bsky.social

I think it would be interesting to have the player be a political actor to some degree, and for there to be some sort of mechanic where doing things for domestic political consumption gave you more freedom of action in the game's central operations simulator.

You might be able to do something if you increase your standing, but the only way to do that is - you guessed it - more naziism. You might find yourself increasingly sure the war was lost, but lacking the standing to effect any meaningful political change + lacking the support for a successful coup

Maybe have another ending where you try unsuccessfully to offer your pure intentions and all the times you upheld good order and discipline before you are executed at Nuremberg.

So a player who wanted to get a good outcome as Germany might feel compelled to engage with Nazi policies - and partake in the associated atrocities, provoking the associated consequences - in the hopes of getting their political standing high enough to have a chance at success.

I think that way, you could get a more "realistic" experience: military success makes naziism more popular, in turn escalating your war goals and driving you to brutal and inefficient policy. You realize you need to put the brakes on the ideology somehow, but your position doesn't let you.

Quite a few people actually tried to kill Hitler, and not an inconsiderable number were members of the defense establishment. Obviously none succeeded; some attempts were discovered and the conspirators punished (killed), other times the conspirators got away with it.

To this, I'd add a few more possibilities: you succeed but get punished, succeed but get marginalized, or succeed and manage to install a (somewhat) more rational leader. Meme ending where you manage to kill Hitler only for Goering to be like "thanks, sucker" while sentencing you to death.

The guy who trained us made $40 and AFAIK nobody made more than $100. You had to push this heavy cart made of plywood around by hand. They had drivers with trailers to take everyone out to their work area and back, one of which accidentally reversed his vehicle into a warehouse support pillar.

I think if you actually wanted a commercial "flying" car that didn't kill you and/or cost a million dollars, it would end up looking like a small gondola with go-cart wheels. Like, you'd have a lightweight car that can connect to an elevated rail system and move around like that.

Would this be worth doing? I dunno. Maybe in some larger, denser cities where right of way is restricted. I do like the idea, though, because it's an example of motorized transportation vehicles carcinizing into trains, though.

Of course, the problem with flying cars has never really been the "flying" part; flight is pretty mature tech at this point and we can definitely get something car-sized to fly. The problem is getting something car-sized to fly *and land* safely, and do it *consistently* without costing millions.

There's some truth to this. But what's infinitely worse is the way that the US's role in killing half a million Syrians is also ignored. The children of dictators far worse than Assad are happy elites in stable democracies like Taiwan & Indonesia. Syria could have been similar. We chose war.

It's a bit odd that Russia is using chemical weapons in Ukraine, but it does seem to really happen at least occasionally! Which is bizarre, because the Ukrainian battlefield is not at all the sort of place where CW are effective and regular explosives are almost certainly better in this context.

I will say, I find Donga really cool. It's practiced in places where people still live in mud huts. They fight naked* except for the jankiest homemade skull caps and elbow guards. They 2-hand a 6' stick and swing like they mean it. Fights are often held to celebrate weddings and harvest festivals.

Birb_at_Arms@birblib.bsky.social

On the other hand, a lot of pre-modern societies had vernacular stick fighting traditions where safety was (sort of) achieved by using a weapon that is more likely to simply hurt like hell than kill you. You still see this in e.g. Ethiopian Donga or South African Nguni but it used to be everywhere.
