I know a lot of folks are waiting for 1.0 to play Scarlet Hollow, but I do think that part of what makes it special is getting to explore the story before it's finished. Each run can completely twist your perspective... will your best friend become your enemy? Will your enemy become your lover?

Slay the Princess is at an all time high discount of ~60% off~ Get one of the best reviewed games of 2023 for just $7.19! 💯 90 metacritic 🗡️ 96% positive on Steam 🗣️ Get yelled at by Jonathan Sims 👁️ Watch Jonathan Sims also get yelled at by Jonathan Sims 😓 Question every choice you make

Continually impressed by after 20 playthroughs, Scarlet Hollow’s capacity to throw out a scene that I hadn’t seen before that changes how I feel about a character or characters. You have to play this game!

When I played Slay the Princess, I liked it so much I bought Scarlet Hollow right then, and then I never got around to playing it. Now I’ve played what‘s currently released of Scarlet Hollow, and now it‘s going to be my Favourite Thing for a good while.

Both of these are really great games that will be of particular interest if you're into narrative game design. So seasonal, too!

What are your priorities as this character? Who and what are you willing to sacrifice to secure those priorities? If we remove the possibility of minmaxed, "everyone wins" scenarios, suddenly things become a lot more personal and immersive. We've reintroduced stakes into a mostly stakeless medium.

This is why one of our primary goals working in the medium of interactive fiction is to disincentivize savescumming as much as possible. It's not enough to make failing a roll interesting, because people are still going to reload. Instead, unpredictability should come from downstream consequences.

It makes sense that people savescum. I savescum. People want optimal outcomes, and anything else feels extra bad when it's from random chance. But optimization is anathema to good storytelling: it removes tension and minimizes dynamic character relationships. It reduces narrative to power fantasy.
