“We’re talking about Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross. Son of a bitch earned that nickname.” - this is the ONLY clue the movie gives us as to why, exactly, we should distrust Ross.

1) I would watch this incredibly goofy idea. Would make for a great cartoon or comic. 2) Increasingly convinced that Andy Weir, the author of good but didactic leftwing hard sci-fi, is just sending out an actor to do media tours for him who is just riffing off what he thinks is nerd stuff.

SlashFilm@slashfilm.bsky.social

Sci-fi author Andy Weir has an idea for a Star Trek/Star Wars crossover that would involve the events of A New Hope and The Wrath of Khan.

One of the joys of having an unexpected weekend afternoon to myself is being able to flip the default sort order on my Letterboxd watchlist from Shortest First to Longest First The fact you can also then filter by "is this available on my streaming services" is a big plus.

The biggest thing I will never understand about this project - and indeed about HBO in general - is who the imagined audience for this who would have gone '8 episodes of 25 minutes? I refuse to watch that!' *is*.

There's visibly a much better Hobbit two-hour film to be found within its seven hour 50 minute runtime, but at least at the level of 'we can get three bites at the box office' I understand the commercial logic.

Strange how the mind works. I love to cook, yet the second my partner is out for an evening my ambition shrinks to 'eh, put some butter on some flagolet beans and some pasta, that'll do'.

These are all great actors who'd be good in most things - I really like Josh O'Connor's film choices and therefore I think I'm most interested in seeing what type of films he'd make once he has the 'Once Was James Bond' halo around him. #analysis

It’s also important to note just how badly her various shows are doing in terms of audience. Her YouTube shows are somehow *dragging down* and damaging the reach of of a channel run by a man who got cancelled by talkTV and was last seen drunkenly rolling on the floor of Isabel Oakeshott’s wedding.

The thing also about Truss is, this is as mad as she's gone in a period in which her successors have been: 1) centre-right guy who was overwhelmed in office 2) centre left guy ditto 3) centre left guy....she is 51. She is going to go even madder when we have an effective rightwing government again.

Stwooooooooooart Laidler@stuartlaidler.bsky.social

Strongly suspect that Truss will become the first PM in history to fully melt her brain on Twitter. Odds are also good she’ll turn up shitfaced to the Cenotaph before trying to start fights with all the other former PMs.

TBH, with a literal handful of exceptions, you can have the old high street back if you are willing to knock down and densify the actual buildings on, in and around the high street.

I used to bet on election outcomes, and I stopped for a number of reasons, but one of them is that as I got older, I just started to feel like what I was doing was cruel, precisely because you're committing an affinity fraud!

My most joyless leftwing opinion is that any homework that is, explicitly and obviously, homework for parents is bad pedagogy, unfair on parents, particularly on mothers, bad use of the teacher's time and bad for social mobility.

ghost malone ergo propter bones@proptermalone.bsky.social

also and respectfully "the teacher sent home a prompt for you to come up with three things that describe your kid" is not some beautiful opportunity for human connection and growth it is a mildly annoying task

How do I reconcile this with many of my rightwing beliefs, not least the 'it's fine for parents to pay for tutoring of various kinds, up to and including private school if they want?' I don't know. I contain multitudes.

The new model will be called Arthritic much like Utds squad

Ciaran Martin@ciaranm.bsky.social

AI doomers now forecasting that within 6-12 months a frontier AI model will be able to manage Manchester United into a successful team. These bs predictions are getting out of control

A weird change that has taken place in my lifetime is that in the past, British racists were aware of what mixed-race people were and were furious about it, as opposed to the New Racism, which frequently seems actively confused by the birds and the bees.

I remember many yrs ago one of my regular customers asked another of my regular customers "I seen you in Shields th other day with a couple of [racial slur] teenagers, what was that about that?" And the other guy replied "Do you mean my fucking grandchildren?" Never seen a man visibly shrink so fast

The New Racism is just as serious in its potential impact as the old, but it is far, far, far, FAR more stupid. 'The calibre of racist has gone sharply downhill' sounds like it should be the start of a joke, but it is also: just demonstrably true!

More up to the minute cultural takes: 'Harley Quinn' is good fun, enjoyable half an hour animated comedy, nice mix of jokes from the gutter with the occasional bit of highbrow humour.

More television shows should be a tight 20 minutes in my view. The upward trend of 'this used to be 42-45 minutes, an hour with adverts' to 'this is now an hour' has been bad for art for the most part.

As an amused observer of Manchester United, I can't wait for Jim Ratcliffe's next sage piece of advice on how Britain should be run.

Desperately wish there was a written record of what type of people the architect of our flat envisaged living it, because I can’t reconcile it either with “the average Kings Cross family at the time” OR “his own family”

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

I worked out the other day that it has more storage space across the flat than floor space in the toilet *and* bathroom, the LCC built for resilience, clearly.

I absolutely love the corridor that is a great size for parties. I really feel like the flat’s first intended occupant, a railway worker, his stay at home and his wife, would probably have preferred a toilet bigger than a coffin with room for a sink, though.

The room that essentially is now used in all the flats as a “study if it is an owner occupier or a scrupulous landlord, or failing that, a bedroom”, that could easily be a generously sized room if the living room were merely large. What was it intended for?
