The current round of 1cc discourse reminded me of how stupid ppl are about conflating run based with difficult constantly, all the more baffling in an age of roguelites. Arcade games arent gonna be completely effortless, but there are a lot of games u can 1cc after a handful of runs or blind

This how you should be engaging with an Arcade game, stop importing your "grinding" mindset from other game styles, all you will end up with is resentment towards the game

Blader's Alt@bladerlbm2.bsky.social

If you are working on a clear, seek to play at least 30 min a day, every day (either full run attempts or practicing sections) 30 min of brain reinforcement >>> 3 hours once per week

Im obviously not spoiling which game it is, but its on the level of difficulty of Final Fight, and after 41 days of practice and playing NO MORE than 2 hours a day (sometimes 30 min) I am able to get to the start of stage 4 out of 5 You can do the same, stop rushing

Its why you will notice how much of the discourse always revolves around framing, getting casuals into it, softening it design, etc The discourse is often led by people who conciously or subconciously have not "bought" into it

Arcade discourse constantly produces baffling takes because its the only style of game where majority of people in the conversation are speaking purely theoretically with no experience (even those who claim they like them)

If you have played video games in the last 20 years, you have most likely brushed up against a variety of genres and game styles To brush up against Arcade games requires going out of your way, actively, which is not something majority of people, yes EVEN hipsters do

So you end up with this situation where EVERYONE is weighing in their thoughts, with no experience to base it on Its like having no lexicon, and grammar knowledge, so your sentences just end up gibberish

There's so many bizarre pro status quo takes wrt credit feeding being ok despite the tiny amount of new games that force 1cc's. Those games tend to work just fine for ppl but still there's so few of them that "it won't work" is not even remotely a justified take

To be a productive member to discourse, you need to be able to take a step back, often from your own emotions Principles and values shape future games and what YOU will play in a year, dont sacrifice it to defend games from morons

My refusal to defend continues is a great example of putting values over defending Arcade games There are two excellent arguments that I refuse to subscribe to out of principle

And in these strong arguments, also lies the fatal weakness that makes informal elements undesirable The context that formalized them outside of the code, no longer exists, we simply have the games now, and the damage is clear

1. The concept of a 1 credit clear was as culturally intuitive to Japanese players/devs as a settings menu, or an ending is to everyone now. Partly becauss it was only a thing at the tail end of the Arcade era, continues came about when "1cc" was the default way of seeing games.

Painful review of the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle on Steam that really highlights how destructive the continue system was to people's perception of arcade games. The beat 'em ups mentioned play wildly different from one another if you're actually trying to survive on 1 credit.

*insert design decision* was a result of hardware limitations of the time, it wasnt an artistic decision This is why Albums dont exist in music anymore

I don't believe the player should have any productive creative input in a game, they should be treated almost entirely as a pilot with no independ will to make any decisions outside of achieving the dev goal in the most efficient way they can currently manage/find:

Action games are about running through the metaphorical "obstacle course" the developer has artistically created Its not about you, you are a vessel along for the ride

Before people start asking. This is about the philosophy behind how a game is made, and officially evaluated A lot of the things you think are inherently connected to creative player choice, can easily be remade with this philosophy in mind (for example, selectable characters)

scraped into the most pathetic Ketsui 1CC of all time. I wouldn't have it any other way. i honestly thought it was over when i got hit (after hitbox-scamming my way past another), but turns out i had an extra life from not dying on the descent. Thanks Ikeda-san.

Considering how many games taper off at the end of their campaign, its a pleasant suprise that Vanquish ends at its highest point. "Final encounter/boss = best part" is weirdly rare in console games

Then again, unlike painting, the graphic styles of each generation were as much a response to the power level of the hardware, as they were a response to social/art climate But we are getting near a post-processing power ceiling for graphics (which might die soon)

i got the final fight 1CC (haggar, hardest difficulty)!!! i'll record commentary later but for now i'm very happy with myself! it's easily my favourite beat 'em up, and it's up there with gun.smoke (arcade) as one of my favourite games of all time. give it a try!

FOMO naturally incentivizes disposable shit you can chew through quickly in order to get to the latest thing out Its just especially noticeable with games because disposable shit and deep rich experiences both take a LOT of time compared to other mediums

I mentioned and alluded towards it at the end of my guest appearance on Edvard & Ludvigs podcast Soft Formalism is a very useful tool for critique and analysis, but hard formalism has too many issues

Beyond high level issues like having to be anachronistic about older games, mostly original vs mostly derivative work, etc You have a bunch of base ?'s like what IS a "You lose" if we dont have real life context of what "losing" even is? What is an "ending", etc

Is it the most useful framework for realizing action game design and empowering the artists agency? I believe so, but none the less, it will be "soft" because some level of context, intent, and interpretation will be needed regardless of how hardline you choose to be

Engaging with the NES library makes it clear that a lot of it was (Easier, sometimes worse) Arcade game at home, which definitely Clarifies a lot of the meme millennial NES hate of the 2000s

One group uses save states because thats what available for practice The other uses save states to see the credits of Super Mario Bros in 30 minutes rather than 7 hours

Blader's Alt@bladerlbm2.bsky.social

You can easily tell who uses save states for the right reason by asking them if they think a robust separate practice mode would be a direct upgrade lol
