Next week!

Modern Japan History Association@modernjapanhist.bsky.social

On May 20! Midori Ogasawara (U of Victoria) on her new book "Colonial Surveillance: Technologies of Identification and Control in Japan’s Empire", in conversation with Miriam Kingsberg Kadia (U of Colorado) and Nick Kapur (Rutgers U Camden). Register for Zoom here: mjha.org/event-6614303

The feedback from Claude AI we're all striving for: "It's perfectly phrased — friendly, concise, and ends with a clear actionable question. No changes needed." I am pleased. 😌

Well, at least that settles the famous argument of Chomsky and Foucault. Although Foucault was no saint, he at least got it right that the idea of justice is discursive and embedded in power relations. I guess Chomsky's universal human values do not hold up... #Chomsky #Epstein #Foucault

theguardian.comNewly released files shed new light on Chomsky and Epstein relationshipLatest communications undermine Chomsky’s earlier claims that he primarily had financial dealings with Epstein

I think there is a genuinely interesting question here: why is phrenology so damn popular? People seem to reinvent it constantly.

Carl T. Bergstrom@carlbergstrom.com

Computer scientists: "So with machine learning we can extract subtle patterns from massive datasets. What shall we do with it?" Business school professors, every single time: "You know, I think phrenology got a raw deal in the late 1800s."
