This was a fun exercise. For the non-philosophers, here's a thread briefly describing the ridiculous views that we philosophers are pretty sure we could find seven experts to agree to. If you read one of them and think "What?!? I must be misunderstanding" you probably aren't.

Kevin Zollman@kevinzollman.com

Okay, philosophy. This our moment: what are the most ridiculous philosophical positions that you think you could get seven philosophers to sign on for?

Has this post-doc ad been circulating among political scientists? If not, please share! It is an amazing 2 year post doc. I was a fellow and my life was changed forever (I even work in Toulouse now!). It is the French version of the Nuffield post-doc ! www.tse-fr.eu/iast-researc...

This drives me CRAZY. I grew up playing sports w/ boys. I played on a U12 boys select soccer team, b4 switching to a U12 girls team that kept beating us. Nobody had any issue with any of it. Youth sports have never had the strict sex/gender boundaries that β€œXX-XY” activists are now trying to defend.

Andrew D Thaler@drandrewthaler.bsky.social

I live in a rural town and, like, I don't know how to tell you this, but the girls play on the boys team and vice versa all the time because otherwise we don't have enough players for a game and it's literally always fine so stop being weirdos about kids sports and just let trans kids play.

That said, it's an interesting fact that you can often extract significant concessions from a certain kinda leftist by activating their insecurity that the True Volk are exurban petit bourgeois reactionaries, and you are intrinsically inauthentic if you're not in this group.

there is no such thing as "open problems in philosophy" what a silly arrogant idea

It's not "bloat." It's not the fancy climbing wall. It's not the faculty. It's a simple fact: We collectively decided to stop funding higher education as a public good.

There is so much heartwarming stuff that's worth remembering in the QTs. And of course some people who cannot, for whatever reason, acknowledge that some things really are better

In 1990, about 20 million animals a year were euthanized in kill shelters. Today, over half the shelters in the US are designated no-kill and less than 500,000 animals are euthanized.

Every aspect of life as a gay man is unimaginably better than it was when I was born in the mid 80s. We beat the plague that was killing us by the hundreds of thousands and then won broad social and civic equality.

β€œWhy is Colin’s bizarro long division a legitimate variation?” would be a good exam question

Colin@colin-fraser.net

I was thinking about why you can’t get any of the .999… expansions by long dividing two integers and I realized it’s because of a certain (good! Let’s not change it!) conventional aspect of the long division algorithm, which is that when we divide a/b we choose remainders strictly less than b. /

My folk theory of one aspect of Everything That Is Happening is that for a long time we had technologies of making publics visible that seemed to compress political debate down into mostly-one dimension, but (a) that turned out to be shit, and (b) when other technologies came along, it was disrupted

Rafe Meager (they/them)@economeager.bsky.social

right! i almost never see people discuss that voters simply facing multivariate policies or having multidimensional preferences undoes the intuitive logic of the median voter model. (because of this pref ordering, plus there's no single intuitive metric of distance in higher dimensional space)
