What is the new Trumpian political economy called? It’s clearly a form of capitalism, but it’s not very neoliberal. In this thread I argue that the type of capitalism Trump is moving us all towards might be a sort of “Machiavellian Neo-mercantilist capitalism”. 🧵

7/ Machiavellianism is marked by manipulativeness, a lack of morality, and a focus on self-interest and personal gain. Machiavellians often engage in deceit and exploitation of others to achieve their objectives, prioritizing personal success over ethical considerations. Sounds right!

8/ The American political economy is still capitalist, because fundamentally it is still a system derived to generate profit for the owners of the means of production through the exploitation of wage labour. But it’s a sort of Machiavellian neo-Mercantilist capitalism. And it sucks. That is all.

The US is now demanding massive war reparations: -from Ukraine, which acted in self-defense against Russian aggression -for the US, which did not get attacked or even fight in the war -as compensation for resources the US used in ways that served US interests, when most US money went to US companies

I have run out of patience with the apparent silence of most US science institutions (and not just US) in the face of Trump & Musk's rampage. There are of so many facets of that, but in this column for @chemistryworld.com I talk about the assaults on inclusion. www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/scie...

For #SuperbOwl 🦉 Sunday I give you M97, the Owl Nebula, from the 0.9-meter telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. The Owl is a planetary nebula, the remains of a sun-like star that lost its outer layers at the end of its lifetime. 🔭🧪 Credit: NOIRLab/NSF/AURA noirlab.edu/public/image...

NEW: Sources tell my office that Treasury Secretary Bessent has granted DOGE *full* access to this system. Social Security and Medicare benefits, grants, payments to government contractors, including those that compete directly with Musk's own companies. All of it.

It's warming so quickly that high alpine forests which emerged during the Holocene Thermal Maximum thousands of years ago are being uncovered by glaciers that developed in the years thereafter when temperatures plummeted (and the Deniers are very confused about this)🧵

What are the primary hurdles to teleportation? Not just recreating duplicate atoms/particles (may be possible), but the amount of quantum computing power and energy needed to do this. The human body has more atoms than stars in the observable universe.

Note that climate warming is too rapid for most species to respond and survive. Also note that with warming, extreme events like heatwaves become longer and more intense - which is a greater impact to species' survival. #ClimateChange #Science🧪#Conservation #Extinction

As expected, the Trump team is already deleting climate info from government websites. In anticipation, our team at Urban Ocean Lab created a permanent archive of 100+ key resources and published a permanent archive: www.urbanoceanlab.org/resource-hub 👩🏽‍💻

You are up to date.
