Life update: December 31 was my last day at the Space Telescope Science Institute. The NASA's Universe of Learning grant that paid a large fraction of my salary was not renewed due to NASA budget cuts, so my contract was not renewed.

“We’ve established that the observatory is fully functional,” said Julie McEnery, #NASARoman senior project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “The telescope can guide and take exposures, data flows appropriately, and we can slew from one place to another for observations.” 🔭

Why build two identical 8.1m telescopes on different continents? To see the whole universe! With Gemini North in Hawaii and Gemini South in Chile, the Gemini Observatory can access the entire night sky without blind spots. [1/5] #Astronomy #GeminiObservatory

Have you looked at the night sky recently? It is ABSURD how many satellites there are, and it will get >1000× worse in our lifetimes. A few billionaires and state actors will ruin the night sky for the next few *centuries*. This ought to be a much, much bigger story than it is

The title says it all: arxiv.org/abs/2610.10834 Still in the peer review process but we* felt it Important to get this out there. Satellite companies are not complying with visual brightness limits. Our estimates are that it will get worse, especially at twilight. *I’m a minor part of “we” here

Added this wonderful anecdone from physicist Joanne Hewett, who was a postdoc at UW-Madison when Halzen first got the idea for IceCube. (1/2)  "We went to lunch on a cold winter day at the student union, as usual, and sat next to the window looking out over frozen Lake Mendota," she recalled.

Inordinately pleased about this year's Nobel Prize in Physics. Francis Halzen is an immigrant (originally from Belgium), a visionary physicist, and also an all-around mensch. I like to see good people winning well-deserved recognition. Also, neutrinos are awesome. arstechnica.com/science/2026...

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory – ideated by this year’s physics laureate Francis Halzen – tracks neutrinos that originate in the distant cosmos.

I attended a seminar by freshly minted Nobel Laureate Francis Halzen many years ago and something he said stuck with me, but it takes some explaining, so this will be a (short) thread. The talk was about neutrino telescopes, and he started by explaining how rarely neutrinos interact with anything.

My first thought when looking at this: very cool, but what planet is it? It's the Earth🤦‍♀️ Why does the Earth look smooth and featureless, other than the auroral ring? It's because Smile is an ultraviolet telescope, and Earth's atmosphere is opaque at ultraviolet wavelengths shorter than ~300 nm.

ESA Space Science@science.esa.int

Inspector Smile is ready for science! 🫡 This is Smile’s first ultraviolet view showing an auroral substorm. With the ultraviolet camera now operational, Smile becomes the first spacecraft since 2008 to capture the full ring of northern lights around the north pole in ultraviolet light. 🔭 🧪 ☀️

Here is a diagram showing the opacity of the Earth's atmosphere by wavelength of light. There are only a few windows where we can see in or out, where the opacity drops to near 0%. Luckily for our DNA, the Earth's atmosphere blocks most ultraviolet and all X-ray and gamma-ray light. Credit: NASA

Didn't realize that the original image had a transparent background and Bluesky would render that as black, making the axes unreadable. Anyway, here is a diagram showing the opacity of the Earth's atmosphere by wavelength of light.

One of my physics professors needed a source of alpha particles. Rather than buying it through official channels, he just brought a bunch of smoke detectors on eBay for their americium. So, if you showed up to an interview at his lab with an ionizing smoke detector, it might be a plus.

Not sure if it would help for you to show up with a smoke alarm to a CPSC interview, but it would make for a pretty fun story.

During the recent Total Solar Eclipse the South Korean Danuri spacecraft obtained a nice view of Earth from Lunar orbit with the Moons shadow just visible on Earth. Here is their image, with attribution added, my colorized version and the nearly simultaneous EPIC-DSCOVR image used for the color.

While the eclipse photos taken through a professional setup with a telescope and a solar filter are impressive, my favorites are always the blurry phone pictures taken through eclipse glasses. People want to share the cool thing they saw! I'm glad I get to experience that second hand.
