This thingy amzn.to/3VRbWXx helped me diagnose the USB issues with my Macbook Air, the Apple Studio Display, and a passive USB hub. Turns out that a USB 3 port cannot deliver more than 1A of current, and the devices were consuming more. I connected one of them directly to the Studio, prob. solved!
