The largest squid species is the colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni). A 495 kg specimen has been found, but they are thought to able to get even bigger. Since they live in the Southern Ocean, they can be hard to find, but last year a juvenile colossal squid was filmed in situ. #SQUIDtember

Comb-finned Squids (genus Chtenopteryx) are one of the two genera in the order Bathyteuthida. These small squid have a unique fins whose muscular ribs give them their frilly appearance and make them look like a swimming ruffle chip. #SQUIDtember

Reef squid (genus Sepioteuthis) are some very charismatic cephalopods that are commonly found close to the shore. They are curious and social squids, often found in squads. They communicate with each other, sometimes by changing colour. #SQUIDtember

I wonder how they feel about spaghetti... Bigfin squids (genus Magnapinna) are iconic squids that are more known for their extremely long, noodly arms than their big fins. We still don't know why they have such lanky limbs, but we love them for it all the same. #SQUIDtember

The largest photophores known to science belong to the Dana octopus squid (Taningia danae). They have a eyelid-like membrane they can use to cover them up, and they use these lemon sized photophores to flash their prey as they grab them with their hook covered arms. #SQUIDtember

The giant squid (Architeuthis dux) is the longest squid, with a mantle length of around 2 m, and is second in size only to the colossal squid. They can be tricky to find because they live in the deep, but their total population is estimated to be in the millions. #SQUIDtember

Joubin's squid (Joubiniteuthis portieri) is a funky, little squid that looks like one of those head massagers. It has a max mantle length of 9 cm and a long tail which is thought to mimic sinophores. They are also the closest relatives to the even more lanky bigfin squids (Magnapinna) #SQUIDtember

🎵 You would not believe your eyes 🎵 Firefly squids (Watasenia scintillans) are covered in blue and green photophores, which gives them the stunning bioluminescence they are known for. They are also the only squid species known to have colour vision. #SQUIDtember

I guess diamonds are forever... Diamondback squids (Thysanoteuthis rhombus) are one of the few cephalopod species that are monogamous and not polyandrous. They pair up as juveniles and stay together until death. They also lay their eggs in what look like giant pink slinkies. #SQUIDtember

Galiteuthis phyllura might not look like it, but they are thought to be one of the largest squid species. Based a specimen discovered in the Sea of Okhotsk in 1984, they are estimated to have a maximum mantle length of 2.7 m. Very big, but not as big as its cousin the colossal squid. #SQUIDtember

The glass octopus (Vitreledonella richardi) has a body that is almost completely transparent. They live water column instead of on the sea floor, so this helps them avoid being seen by predators. The only parts of its body that are opaque are its eyes, digestive tract and chromatophores #OCTOtober

The Southern Sand Octopus (Octopus kaurna) is a lanky octopus that is an expert in burrowing under the sand. They use their siphon to jet water into the sand to fluidize it, then they start digging and pull themselves in. Then use their long arms to make a hole so they can breathe. #OCTOtober

The Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) was once thought to be a single species that was distributed worldwide. However, we now know that they are part of a species complex that contains at least six species, and some of the species in the complex have ranges that overlap with each other. #OCTOtober

A beautiful and large (3” length) specimen of a Brachioteuthis glass squid, shot right here in Bali. 2 individuals over my last 2 nights out is pretty special for such a rare species! Shot using scuba, far offshore from NE Bali, out over the deep abyss, while drifting with the plankton, at night.

Dumbo octopuses (genus Grimpoteuthis) kind of look like a cartoon ghost with large fins that look like elephant ears. They flap their fins to propel their gelatinous bodies through the ocean. They are also the deepest dwelling octopuses, with one being observed at a depth of 6,957 m. #OCTOtober
