This is the remembering of Walter Koenig he deserves. This is the one that matters to me. Chekov was good, Bester was grand.

J. Michael Straczynski@straczynski.bsky.social

Today we lost Walter Koenig. Some thoughts about a fine actor and genuinely nice guy....

Some mad genius baked a cupcake into an ice cream cone and now I want that all the time

A philosophical point I like is that a person using a tool can take on the identity of "person-and-tool". Driving a car, I _am_ the system of me-and-car. In this sense, the system of Krista-and-Claude talking to itself can still wind up saying something interesting. Huh. Cool?

So I guess talking to an LLM chatbot is at least as good as asking advice of a Tarot deck ;-)

Krista dealt with Claude in what must be her strongest mode, as an interviewer. I was disappointed she gave it credit it didn't deserve as interview-able, but, _this is what she does_ so, okay.

this but I'm waiting to dig out my favorite 3 meter long scarf

Massachusetts is proposing open-primary top-two-runoff. vote NO because it's such a stupid suboptimal change that's mostly a step sideways. MA like CA will _sometimes_ get a more interesting D vs D general election. The right answer would be RCV with ballot access reform www.wbur.org/news/2026/10...

wbur.orgQuestion 3: Should Mass. switch to all-party primaries? Campaigns clash over competitivenessSupporters say the proposed ballot measure would make elections more competitive and give voters more choice. But opponents say it would do just the opposite.

Ranked Choice Voting could be awesome, but a national organization taking up all the of the space building a campaign on lies doesn't help. They lie about how it works, they lie about how it helps, when they could be doing it right at no extra cost. FairVote lies. Stupid.

Theatre says 'costume makes the character', and I think that rhymes with what derek is saying, and I want to come back to this thread and reconsider what costume and character I am making for myself

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

the wild thing is that several of the parts of this two year old PC are now so expensive I wouldn't want to replace them or build new with them. my whole life in tech things got cheaper every 18 months— until the current bubble where everything got expensive and got stuck expensive

I had a vacation; I was actually too busy (pleasantly) vacationing 95% of the time to check my phone, and at the down moments it just didn't have the appeal, the real world was better, didn't need phone world. anyway, did I miss anything since last Wednesday?

The average person is neutral on chaos vs order, but Chaos Georg should not be counted and really the median person is solidly in favor of order

I have hand crafted manually optimized assembly code. This is part of why I'm grumpy about vibe coding

I have a theory about how many of the world's problems are caused by people who were told they were the smartest people alive as kids, believed it, and then when they became adults and couldn't accept that maybe they weren't that special, started breaking shit if only to prove they were special

if beef didn't already exist and it was growing fast we'd all hate it. I am also rationalizing being in the tech industry and the tradeoffs that come with that; and I was also already a grumpy vegetarian

alasdair@alasdairc.bsky.social

beef is negative food. you turn 1000 calories of feed into 100 calories of beef and a whole lot of methane and cow shit. ai does produce more food than the beef industry (zero)

just finished @adapalmer.bsky.social 's "Inventing the Renaissance" and it finishes with as resounding a pep-talk of optimism of humanity as I have heard anywhere. Beautiful stuff. Love it.

And it lands better having gone through the whole book. HistoryHistoryHistoryHistory ... and therefore, we're gonna be okay, we're gonna be spectacular

Amazing. I once bought a custom built suit that only worked if you stood around statuesque in it. (Indochino is garbage, avoid)

derek guy@dieworkwear.bsky.social

It's great to see tailoring accommodate such extreme movement today. This level of tailoring was a bit more common in the past, as you can see in old films featuring Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, but many modern suits will lift off the wearer's neck even when they're just walking.

'this way lies madness', but, so does the other way, so maybe sometimes wisdom is choosing the better madness

The new "ai" stuff can do some neat tricks, but I'll be really excited when the trillion dollar companies profiting off of everything ever written are taxed to give back to everyone now alive #UBI

@datadoghq.com your docs are bad and you should feel bad. The Python SDK has no notes on using the new personal access tokens. The best way I've found to design a new query is to use the web 'explore', then turn on browser debugging, reload, and watch what queries it does

I believe they will "cheat like hell", they will id-challenge people, they will throw away ballots, they will intimidate with armor and guns

PBS News@pbsnews.org

After President Donald Trump told attendees at the Republican midterm convention Thursday night that "we want honesty in our elections," he led them in a pledge to "cheat like hell" and "go out and vote" in the midterm elections. https://to.pbs.org/4yTjfzl

Some part of the AI debate is essentialism. The belief that a thing is better _because of the story behind it_. Sometimes this is a compressed bundle of beliefs around labor and justice and sustainable economy; but sometimes it's just magic.

Sometimes there will be the desire for the rare/exclusive thing, getting the handmade unique thing in a world of un-special industrial indentical millions of things

And we should absolutely have these debates and I want to have them in a smarter more honest way. Go find some activist philosophy professors to read. 😉
