A fucking eight-year-old drew a zombie during Halloween season. This has fuck-all to do with parents buying guns for underage children. I also guarantee you this sort of treatment of a child for expressing her imagination will have worse ramifications for that kid than "hurting her feelings."

If you can't tell the difference between a third-grader drawing a zombie during Halloween season and a genuinely disturbed kid receiving a gun from their parents as a gift, that's for you and your therapist to figure out, not to inflict on other people

Also: don't you dare come to my post like this fucking jagoff. I specifically said, based on my own lived experience, that this kind of treatment can be traumatic for kids, and you're reducing that to "hurt widdle fee-fees?" Fuck off right into the sun

Side note: this is partly why I dislike the horror movie trope of Creepy Child Drawings™️ as shorthand for that kid being evil or under the influence of some evil being or force

What I experienced as "punishment" for being into dark/weird shit/creepy art was ultimately traumatizing and taught me I couldn't trust adults. Obviously this had long-term ramifications well into my adult life. I never went on to murder anyone, but I AM a published horror writer. How about that?

"You need to hide any interest in 'dark' things or adults will think you're dangerous and act accordingly" is an INCREDIBLY damaging thing to teach a kid.

"It's okay to suspend a 3rd-grader for drawing a zombie because schools need to be hypervigilant about signs of a potential school shooter" fucking LISTEN to yourself. THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WHO LIKE HORROR ARE NOT DANGEROUS.

So the "advice" doled out in this column makes me INCREDIBLY fucking angry as a former kid who was repeatedly taken to task by teachers for "inappropriate" drawings, culminating in a 9th-grade suspension spurred by Columbine paranoia and residual Satanic Panic. Arionne here says that was JUSTIFIED.
