populism is nearly always bad, but the current iteration of right-wing populism is maybe the worst iteration because it articulates populism in terms of the very worst qualities of the people it claims to represent we have schools in appalachia, and they have maps in them and everything

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance says of the Middle East that it's "a region of the world made up of countries whose name I couldn't even pronounce"

there are strong reasons to object to increased role of casual gambling in every day life--and stronger still reasons to worry about the corruption that gambling tends to bring into public spaces but most of today's takes on prediction markets and Brazil are just variations on this

what's silly about these objections in particular is that we've spent the last ten years reciting the arguments that emphasize that weighted models only predict the odds of outcomes and not the outcomes themselves "the upshot said there was a 40% chance it would happen--therefore it will happen!"

more sophisticated objections (eg. betting odds add no new information) are better arguments but probably wrong we don't have a good sense of what additional information they lend, but we do have tentative evidence that they are in fact better than weighted polling, especially further out

Trump was in Clemson last night. Might presumably want Littlejohn Coliseum, the basketball stadium that seats ~9000. Ends up in T. Ed Garrison Arena, where we do the rodeo/livestock shows and monster truck rallies. Capacity ~3000. Not sayin, just sayin

again--don't like his signature policies, but El-Sayed's answers are just really, really good

Will Wilkinson@wlknsn.xyz

I think El-Sayed rankles the likes of Brooks and Axelrod so much because he’s mastered the Kirby Frame. For guys accustomed to shaping opinion by manipulating political rivals into discussing issues from within a disadvantageous frame, it feels like cheating or at least bad sportsmanship.

it's not that the court is bad; we do NOT want to set a precedent that the court's composition is subject to electoral pressure it's that *McConnell already stole a seat*; we DO WANT to set a precedent that violating norms has consequences

15-year-old dryer broke on saturday went behind there with some tools, a multimeter, and my phone with claude on it diagnosed several bad elements ordered part like the attached image parts arrive I *fix* the fucking thing wife: didn't think you had that in you crack beer stovetop goes out

If care about free markets, you not only get more from center-left Dems than the party of Trump, you get more *from professed democratic socialists* like Mamdani than you do from the party of Trump. Those who deny this only think of it as an anti-left cultural totem and not a real policy agenda.

guys if you think effective altruism is crazy, wait til you hear what Nussbaum and others of considerable standing have said about animals and the "problem of predation"

Even one of the great failures of lib-coded cities--eg. their astonishing homeless populations--can be attributed to hillbilly bigots. What a world! No policy solutions in sight--except changing hearts and minds!!

i spend a lot of time explaining to boomer conservative colleagues that the "love of equality" that shows up in eg. Book VIII of Republic has less to do with eg. transgenderism and much, much, much more to do pedophile Denny Hastert

far more useful to think of it as an exceedingly rigorous extension of modern concerns over authenticity or various protestant-coded concerns about inner/outer truths and sexual purity. the space is filled to the brim with virtue talk; "depraved" is the last word i'd use to describe it.

compare to the smorgasbord of immorality offered by MAGA. every criminal pardoned, every sin forgiven. trump dodges the draft, stiffs contractors, skips on taxes? he's "smart" and anyone else would've done the same. his vices are virtues and the very idea of virtue is a joke.

who does this sound like? does this sound like the woke left--which is if anything hyper-moralized? or does it sound like today's GOP, which is opposed on principle to the *very idea of criminality* every consequence is a "weaponization" of the justice system. nixon himself "rehabilitated."

for many (perhaps all) of them, woke/trans issues are mere extensions of the "logic" of the sexual revolution, which is understood as a *relaxation* of traditional moral norms. this is a bad and stupid framing. does this space seem "relaxed" to you?!

we've done a lot of dunking on libertarians on here and I have wanted to point out for a long time that while very many *libertarians* revealed themselves to be authoritarians or useful idiots, libertarianism has been *extremely vindicated* in a number of key ways

I have many times said that 2016 pushed me further to the right, and I submit that it pushed a number of traditional lefties to the right as well--on economics especially, but also on civil society and associations of all stripes

i think expanding the court is a bad idea; altering a court whose legitimacy rests on its perceived stability and neutrality bc you think it unduly or unjustly hinders your preferred political program is, i think, both wrong and bad that said, i hope the dems pack the court (or at least reform it)

for me it's straightforward to the point of stupidity: mitch mcconnell stole a seat in 2016. that's the whole reason. every court reforming effort should refer again and again back to this one fact: they stole a seat in 2016 in plain sight, and they laundered this fact via the 2016 pres election.

not once have i seen someone run through these arguments in a way that wasn't totally overrun by some combination of bizarre moralism (stop "POLICING" students, less "PUNITIVE" culture!) or just-asking-questions dipshittery (is it much different than google? is it necessarily wrong?)

it is worth stepping back occasionally and remarking upon the extent to which deans and administrators of all sorts have turned the job of an academic into **finding and spending** money

genuine question: let us agree that departments and, if necessary, faculty senate should be in position to evaluate cases re: what is/isn't germane to course material; speech that seems inappropriate within the university. how do they enforce these evaluations on a faculty member?

i guess that's not right, no--ideally any grievance board would defer to the processes established by the department. but you would need a university administration that would give considerable weight to the professional evaluations established by the department.

that last sentence was imprecise and maybe ungrammatical. say a professor includes language on their syllabus that a body of departmental faculty, upon request, deems inappropriate. what to do? my guess is that any punishments meted out will be grieved *immediately*

while i am happy to hear that the administration's latest crackdown on international students will not go into effect today, i do just want to note that, beyond its stupidity and cruelty, it wasted a truly massive amount of time for anyone dealing with international students.

"trust is difficult to build and comparatively easy to destroy" used to be a conservative axiom

Bottom line: We need better messaging, but we can't message our way out of this. We need a political system that incentivizes elites to support the democratic process and penalizes those who seek to undermine it.
