Okay, I was right on the money. Toasting with Colby-jack brought out the best flavors of the ham and the cheese pulled it all together. This is a good sandwich and I'll make it again.

It’s release day! DEVILRY IN GODLING WOOD: A Medieval Horror is out from Sentinel Creatives in paperback, ebook, & audiobook. Mybook.to/devilry

Reading The prose is fine, aside from unnatural dialogue, but the basic premise is deeply flawed. We are never even given a hint what the photograph is. Either the author couldn't think of something or didn't think we'd care, and the MC is both nameless and never described.

Okay, the five spice is definitely an improvement. It pairs well with the savory, faintly smoky ham and the sweet fruit spread and helps them mesh better. I think I'd go a step further and toast this with some Colby-jack cheese if I had any. I think that would really bring it home.

Neal Adams once stopped at my table at a convention, picked up a book, said, "Very nice stuff you got here," then put it down, looked me in the eye and asked, "Where's the john?"

Reading This is not the best Colby. It starts off fairly strong, then meanders and is padded out with POV chapters for secondary characters that add little. As Colby was primarily a short story writer, I strongly suspect this was a story hos agent asked him to expand.

Everything about this screamed early aughts DTV slasher but so far it's like dirt bag Night of the Demons with cowboy zombies. Bloody Bill hasn't even killed anyone himself, dang it.
