Sort of delights me that most of the GM car brands just have one-word names (Buick, Chevrolet, etc.) but only one has a full, grown-up name: Cadillac Motor Car Division.

In To Hell and Back, Audie Murphy (playing himself in his own life story) famously fights off about 50 Germans singlehandedly from atop burning tank. In reality, it was more like 100 Germans, but the filmmakers thought the audience wouldn't believe the truth.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

In The Hunt for Red October, characters aboard the USS Dallas mention milligals, a measure of anomalies in Earth's gravitational field. The fact that US Navy submarines could measure these anomalies for navigational purposes was highly classified at the time and constituted a major security breach.

SCHMITT: Are you aware we have credit card records indicating you dined and gambled with a notorious gangster? SMITH: I...what? What gangster? SCHMITT [brandishing game tickets]: The man they call "The Rat," one Charles Entertainment Cheese?

"[P]eople are often harshest to those who care about them. The Heritage Foundation won’t give us the time of day—so we rag on the Human Rights Campaign. The random dive bar down the street hasn’t been requiring masks since 2020—so we expect mandatory masking every single night from the queer bar."

Fell asleep in an IMAX theater during a movie called Adrenaline Rush. Context: I got up at an ungodly early hour to fly from Chicago to DC to meet up with friends at the Udvar-Hazy Center on the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight.

What’s your best sleeping story? Mine is probably falling asleep under a piano at Gare Du Nord after reporting on the Bataclan attacks and being woken up by armed police.

Helped out as a temp in a credit counseling service's office in 2000 making sure files were up-to-date. Takeaways: 1. People who have the best stuff often got it by being >$30K in debt. 2. Never carry a balance on my credit card. 3. Creditors would rather get some of their money than none of it.

Chicagoans/railfans/Chicago railfans of Bluesky: does anyone have a map of the proposed new Amtrak yard in Bridgeport? The locals are freaking out, claiming it will displace hundreds of people, but it seems more likely they'll only use the existing yard + maybe some of the stadium parking lots.

The Navy never should have named a carrier after Miller: traditionally, naval heroes are honored with the name of a destroyer or frigate. But naming any ship after Donald Trump, particularly while he's still alive, and *particularly* while he is still in office, is egregious.

The recent trend of naming carriers after presidents is both overly politicized and a bad precedent. The Navy should have a list of famous ships to name carriers after and cycle through that continuously.

Recommended names, many of which are not currently in use by the Navy: America Bonhomme Richard Boxer Constellation Enterprise Essex Hornet Independence Intrepid Kearsarge Kitty Hawk Lexington Monitor Ranger Saratoga Wasp Yorktown

You start to get a lot of political pressure to name ships after mediocre presidents, which is why we inexplicably have a USS Gerald Ford and are planning on naming a carrier for George W. Bush. Both of whom are below average in historians' rankings of presidents.

The NASA Press Office further clarified that the station's onboard AI diagnosed the problem; that, no, they hadn't watched 2001: A Space Odyssey lately; and OH SHIT OH SHIT GET THEM INSIDE GET THEM BACK INSIDE RIGHT NOW.

In college I dated a girl who had a fiance, Mike, in another state. (Yes, I was the other man.) When she dropped me, I told her that if she was this unsure about the engagement "you will never marry Mike." She did not marry Mike. More to the story, but you didn't ask for "biggest bullets dodged."

Every July 4, there ought to be mass naturalization ceremonies as the centerpiece of every festivity. Before fireworks. Before baseball games. At the start of parades. Immigration built America, and naturalization keeps our country young.

Who remembers that episode of Star Trek where the crew celebrated Halloween and Riker dressed up as Orson Welles?

Okay, so we're looking for an obese man who was 79 in April who's extremely well connected and doesn't think the normal rules apply to him. Hmm.

EXCLUSIVE: Eli Lilly gave compassionate use access to retatrutide, their unapproved powerful obesity drug, to a 79-year-old man in April. The application was arranged by a top doctor at NIH, and cleared by the FDA. www.statnews.com/2026/06/23/e...
