I don't quite have words yet. I'm stunned, grateful, disoriented. My deepest, deepest thanks to the five families without whom this book would not exist. It has been the honor of my life to know and learn from you.

"In Israel the filmmakers were described as traitors... Mobs hunted for them and their families... The same Israeli officials who declared that there were no innocents in Gaza are now outraged by a film showing that this is exactly the principle the military has acted on."

Thrilled to share that the UK edition of THERE IS NO PLACE FOR US is out now from @canongate.co.uk. Though based in Atlanta, the forces pushing working people into homelessness extend far beyond the US. So, too, does the growing movement fighting for safe, dignified housing as a fundamental right.

Meanwhile, in other news from the apparently debatable affordability crisis: "The number of people who said they had delayed or skipped care altogether because of the expense increased to 50 percent this year from 46 percent in 2022."

Went to the food pantry for the first time since I was 19 today. Only getting medical care because my ex-employer had good coverage and I can scrape together COBRA - I hit my out-of-pocket max. And I’m employed. Also luckily housed! But behind…

No one should be hungry

Two back-to-back deaths in for-profit facilities contracting with ICE. These facilities are more dangerous than government ones, and are more secretive because they aren't subject to FOIA. If we can't shut them down, we can at least make them transparent. Extend FOIA to private prisons.

Dozens of masked settlers attacked Palestinian villagers and savagely beat a Washington Post photographer today. "Israeli troops arrived shortly before the attack, which seemed to embolden the settlers. Soldiers fired tear gas at Palestinians and 'did absolutely nothing about the settlers.'"

Masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers on Friday, setting olive groves on fire and slinging rocks. Caught in the attack was Post photographer Heidi Levine. “They just kept kicking me and kicking me, like probably 50 times,” Levine said. https://wapo.st/4yt6dHY

"The attack was among several targeting Palestinians trying to gather their olive harvest... These incidents are just the latest in weeks of intensifying pogroms on local communities in the West Bank by Israelis from illegal settlements who are protected—or at least unrestricted—by Israeli forces."

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

People tell me to "get a job" when I mention that I'm homeless. I was working full-time right before I had a mental breakdown that lead to me losing my job, housing, and possessions(and I have a job now even while living in a shelter). I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

Yes. Homelessness is a choice that we make, as a society, every day. If it gets treated as part of the architecture of civilization, that’s only because powerful forces want you to think that way. Finally, it would cost less to house every unhoused person than it costs us to leave them homeless.

We need this written on dozens of massive billboards in Los Angeles. We have neighbors living on the street because we lack affordable housing. The police don’t build housing through arrests and imprisonment. Mental health services don’t conjure up housing. We need beds, and we need them now.

About to testify in favor of this and am going to lift up @brian-goldstone.bsky.social's amazing book There is No Place for Us, which details how corporate behaviors directly lead to people being pushed into homelessness, where they are still used as instruments of profit for shareholders.

More than half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Starbuck's CEO took home $31 million - 1,794 times more their median worker. Live Nation's CEO made $33 million - 976 times the median pay. The system has been rigged against the working class, but the Fair Share Tax starts to change that.
