Eerily similar to what Great Gatsby villain Tom Buchanan says in novel published in 1920s. Buchanan says something like-we Nordics do all the things that make society go-art, literature, science. He's reading a book called The Rise of the Colored Empires & warns about white race being submerged1/2

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

This is all horrible, and why the fuck is he saying this, but as a big fan of Arabic literature, "they don't produce literature" is the most obscenely ignorant thing I can think of a person saying. Fuck him forever.

Even if this wasn't all true, which it is, I wouldn't want Brazilians to live under fascism. I'd want young Serbs to have a say in their future. Even if, and this may sound crazy, it doesn't impact or benefit me, I still want people to have better lives.

I think this becomes quite understandable in the context of an international fascist movement that has swept much of the planet in a decade, with horrifying and very extreme consequences for the entire species

There are fireworks going off in Antioch. It's probably just because it is warm out, and this is Antioch, but I am going to pretend people around here are super excited about Lula.

It also means the old man isn't getting out of prison, and you know he'd been practicing that triumphant exit fist pump.

Patrick Wyman@patrickwyman.bsky.social

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

I remember being at Game 2 of the 2005 World Series, after Pods's walk-off dinger, and knowing the series wasn't coming back home. That this was the last time I'd see them that season. It was joyful but also a little sad. I didn't want to leave that night. I wanted that moment to never end.

I think on being so wide open he slowed up a step to make it easier then realized he had to take another few steps faster and just got flustered.

How bad can it b---- oh no

One way you can tell that trans activists and allies are not powerful elites is that it is super easy, in the US and UK, to pass laws targeting trans people. Powerful elites tend to not allow that to happen to them!

Listen, I wouldn't consider myself an Elon fan, but it is genuinely impressive how many historically shitty, cruel, deadly, and inhuman things he can do every day. Imagine if he took that energy and directed it toward something more productive, like shuffling off this mortal coil.

Scott Horton@robertscotthorton.bsky.social

In addition to throttling StarLink and StarShield to allow his friend Vladimir Putin to strike Ukraine with ballistic missiles, the other thing Elon Musk does every day is sit at his keyboard and write slanderous things about James Talarico. He's utterly deranged.

It's not the best part of this World Series but it will be nice that neither fan base can complain that "MLB just wants (big city) to win!"

Great thread. Makes it clear, which it always was, of course, that for Jared the world is nothing more than a place to make money. Countries, human beings, real lives: none of those mean anything to him.

With Angel Reese cruising toward a Finals MVP these fucking dopes are desperate to talk about anything else.

Gabe Fernandez@thelatinochild.bsky.social

The Outkick reporter who the WNBA gave a Finals credential to is now trying to expand the national anthem criticism to WNBA staffers, including surveilling their behavior during the song.

I am sure lots of people have pointed this out, but this might not be a clear lie: Vance and Co think that whatever they steal is ok, because they are the rightful rulers of the state. For everyone else it is fraud.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance: "There is no person who hates the idea of people enriching themselves fraudulent over access to the government than Donald J Trump"

What is it going to provoke Russia to do? Invade? Kidnap tens of thousands of children? Try to erase the idea of Ukraine?

Kate from Kharkiv@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social

Weidel: "Prolonging the war and shooting drones into the hinterland of Russia, destroying refineries, houses, and buildings near Moscow, is a huge provocation." Host: "It's defending itself." Weidel: "No, it's not." Host: "Every night, drones and ballistic missiles rain down on Ukraine..."

I loved @jesterholm.bsky.social last story collection, "The Effects of Urban Renewal on Mid-Century America and Other Crime Stories" and am very excited to read this one. He gives a beaten grace to his characters; the stories always surprise through the cold midwest self-wrought tragedies.

Jeff Esterholm@jesterholm.bsky.social

The Publication Day for TOLLUND MAN has arrived. Published by Cornerstone Press, the collection is available through your favorite bookstore. And look at that, old friend Zakariah Johnson already has his copy.

I mean this very seriously: a horse as a Senator is less damaging and less insane than Hegseth as Secretary of Defense.

Corey Rayburn Yung@coreyryung.bsky.social

He's a month away from trying to appoint a horse as a Senator.

You can't "disavow" something didn't supportin the first place. It's like someone asking me if I disavow my fandom for, like, the Eagles or whatever. Madam, I never.

I'm curious what the "danger" is, here

Alex Hern@hern.bsky.social

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

I ask everyone who stands behind John Conryn, a stupid piece of shit who I hate, to stand with me.

Paxton’s internals must be terrible

(Nodding sagely, not having any idea what movies or music are currently popular): Man, time really is a flat circle...

Jason Lukehart@jasonlukehart.bsky.social

The last time the Brewers played in the World Series, "E.T." was the #1 movie at the box office, and John Cougar's "Jack & Diane" sat atop the Billboard Hot 100.

This is why I think Kushner and Witkoff were "stunned" when the Ukranians refused to stop hitting refineries. They literally can't conceive of anyone doing anything except to make money. They didn't believe that Ukranian leadership actually means it, and isn't just negotiating for more scratch.

I don't always think it is couth to make fun of physical appearance, even if the person deserves nothing but scorn. However, under no circumstances is Tracey obliged to dress like this. He's a grown man. Get some real pants. Pathetic.

W.E.D.em Boyz@leftistwonk.bsky.social

I did not know a human could look like this

The thing about the Shane Gillis "joke" is that it in no way is a joke. There's nothing remotely funny or observant about it. It is literally just "don't you hate women? I hate women."

Kayleigh McEnany was, in terms of chosen aesthetic and habit, a genuinely perfect fascist. Karoline Leavitt was very good at her job of lying and pushing fash propoganda with a smile. This one seems a bad clone of both, a decaying breakdown. Like

All season the Sox played a game where things could go very right or very wrong. Went right a little more often during the regular season. Went very right the first four games of the post-season. Have gone very wrong the last two. Still one more game, but it's hard to see patching together a win.

I've actually been doing a very good job not nervously smoking during the White Sox playoffs, since it has been found money, but I think tonight will break my resolve.

This very much depends on how you define the Midwest. The forests of Michigan and Wisconsin, the plains of Minnesota, the riverolands of the Mississippi, hell, the graveyards of Chicago, all filled with ghosts and spirits and stories.

I could be wrong, but I don't remember a politician being hurt by "didn't serve their term when they promised" as much as "won't pledge a full term." Just lie about it!
