I own Brazilian stocks as part of a diversified portfolio. I didn't buy any when people started pricing in Bolsanoro's deregulation and benefits to the rich. And I'm not selling any today as they managed to save their democracy. They were cheap before, they're cheaper now. $EWZ $FLLA $ILF #econsky

Weekly Market Status 🧵 #econsky Figures as of Friday, Oct 23, after the close. Markets stayed cautious a second week. My health score rose from -28 to -21 (on a -100 to +100 scale), 2 points shy of Neutral. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2% after last week’s 2.0% drop. Its longer trend holds. $VOO

Most buys were dips in quality names in uptrends: Frontline, Liquidity Services, Oscar Health, GigaCloud, large biotech, oil & gas producers, Genesco. The exception: intermediate bonds, a deep-dip buy on a broken chart, maybe a dead-cat bounce. $FRO $LQDT $OSCR $GCT $IBB $IEO $GCO $BIV #econsky

Next week I will try to sit on my hands again: “Don’t just do something, sit there.” An exception (not advice): I bought a VIX call spread. I may add if the VIX pulls back near 18 and sell some if it reaches 21, reassess. If it climbs to 29, I’ll force myself to buy something. $VIX #econsky

So what did I do? Very few moves, for me (not advice). I may have missed the best place to sell, I’m allocated enough for this tenuous tape, and I didn’t chase long entries. Chatter is about the election, including investors pricing in an Iran escalation right after the midterms. #econsky

My Trades (not advice): I sold $Uber at $68 on a Darvas sell and possible squeeze breakdown; trimmed Microsoft, JFrog, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Dominion. I’m stuck in a breaking-down Alphabet call spread, hoping earnings or next week make it a failed breakdown. $MSFT $FROG $LOW $HD $D $GOOGL #econsky

Rates gave stocks some help. The 10-year yield fell 11 bp to 4.988%, a third straight weekly drop, and its 13-week rise cooled to 30 bp, clearing my rate-shock reading. The last 2-year print was 4.77%, and markets still price in rate hikes. $TNX #econsky

Oil kept climbing: crude rose 4.7%, a third straight weekly gain and +14.5% in four weeks, closing at the week’s high on fears of a U.S.-Iran escalation. Credit didn’t confirm the stock bounce: junk bonds were flat vs short-term bonds, still 1.5% behind over four weeks. $USO $HYG $BSV #econsky

Not everything was defensive, though. Small caps beat the S&P by 2.4%, homebuilders by 5.1% and regional banks by 4.0%, and the average stock beat the index a 3rd week. 3 of 12 short-term gauges now read healthy (0 last week), but the short-term regime stays risk-off. $VTWO $ITB $KRE $RSP #econsky

The biggest strength moves (0-100 scale) show the same split. Gainers: Australian dollar +25, Vietnam +21, financials +19, regional banks +19. Decliners: communication services -34, copper miners -24, precious metals -20, platinum -20. $FXA $VNM $VFH $KRE $VOX $COPP $GLTR $PLTM #econsky

Fear eased, but only on the week. The VIX dipped 2.7% to 19.5, yet finished strong after a three-day cool and is up 31% over four weeks. It’s breaking out of a 1-day squeeze to the upside, with squeezes stacked on multiple timeframes behind it, signaling more energy to release. $VIX #econsky

Defensives won a third straight week. Staples, health care and utilities rose 1.4% vs -0.2% for the S&P; over three weeks it’s +7.9% vs -1.1%. Tech was on the other side: chips trailed by 2.2%, and chips and both Nasdaq funds slid to lagging. $VDC $VHT $VPU $SMH $QQQ $QTOP #econsky

TRUMP: We gave nothing in exchange for Stephen. We never give anything in exchange for hostages. TRUMP LITERALLY MOMENTS LATER: If I implemented sanctions on Russia, Steven wouldn't be coming out right now.

It's a shame Trump doesn't have a sense of humor. If he did, they could all have a laugh about how brilliant this troll of Trump's "mother of all bombs" plan is and end this thing with laughter.

My own moves (not advice): Monday I trimmed emerging markets, including Korea and Taiwan. I didn’t open a single bullish option. I did start positions in Reinsurance Group of America and Frontline, and added to Keysight. $FLKR $FLTW $RGA $FRO $KEYS #econsky

So how am I thinking about it? With the VIX at 20, I’d rather look for places to buy than sell, but carefully, at the safest entries I can find. Not the time to get aggressive. I may take a day off the screen so I’m not shaken out of key AI and Nasdaq holdings. $CHAT $QQQ $QTOP #econsky

Oil was the other big story. Crude rose 9.1%, its second straight weekly gain, and sits about 1% below its 52-week high. Energy, oil & gas producers and gas producers all moved into the leading group. One oddity: oil services’ weekly trend turned down anyway. $USO $VDE $XOP $FCG $OIH #econsky

Beneath the headline, the S&P’s longer trend is up but its supporting cast isn’t: breadth, small caps, credit, housing and emerging markets all read weak over 13-26 weeks. This week junk bonds and small caps lagged again. $VOO $HYG $VTWO $RSP $VWO #econsky

The biggest drops were mostly recent high-flyers: generative AI -39 (91 to 52), South Korea -28, heavy robotics -27, security & defense tech -25 and momentum stocks -22. Generative AI and momentum both fell from leading to lagging. $CHAT $FLKR $IBOT $FITE $MTUM #econsky

Rates help explain it. The 10-year yield fell 15 bp to 5.098%, still up 57 bp in 13 weeks, and rate-sensitive groups cheered: utilities beat the S&P by 3.8%, homebuilders by 4.0%. The short end didn’t join in, though. The 2-year rose to 4.77%, with hikes still priced in. $TNX $VPU $ITB #econsky

Money moved to defense. Staples, health care and utilities averaged +3.1% while the S&P lost 2.0%, a second straight week of defensives winning. Growth paid for it: chips trailed the S&P by 8.5%, growth lagged value by 5.6%. $VDC $VHT $VPU $SMH $VUG $VTV #econsky

The rotation shows up in the biggest strength gains (board’s 0-100 scale): global cash-rich companies +31, hedged intl low-vol dividend +28, intl dividend growth +28, Canada +27, mid-cap value +26 and staples +26. $GCOW $LVHI $VIGI $FLCA $VOE $VDC #econsky

The biggest change was fear. The VIX jumped 34.7% to 20.0, a week after slipping 3.1%. That dragged the short-term picture to risk-off: none of 12 short-term gauges read healthy now, vs. 4 a week ago. The 13-26 week trend is risk-off too; the 26-52 week view is mixed. $VIX #econsky

Market Status 🧵 #econsky As of Friday morning at 11 am: A quiet headline week hid a sharp shift underneath. The S&P 500 slipped about 1%, but the real story was where money moved: out of the AI and tech trade and into steadier, cash-generating corners of the market.

Biggest momentum gainers: global dividend payers, materials, Canada, the Dow 30, medical devices, staples, mid-cap value, and the equal-weight S&P, which beat the cap-weighted index by 2.1%. Breadth improved even as the largest names stumbled. #econsky

Biggest losers: generative AI, South Korea, defense tech, momentum stocks, robotics, AI chips, and lithium. Elsewhere, junk bonds lagged safer Treasuries, small caps lagged large, oil rose nearly 6%, and the VIX climbed about 8%. A rotation, not a rout, so far. #econsky

Healthcare $VHT, utilities $VPU and consumer staples $VDC gained about 3% on the week while the S&P fell 1%, their second straight week in front. Value stocks beat growth by 4.5%. Semiconductors $SMH trailed the broad market by nearly 8% in five sessions. #econsky

The puzzle: the 10-year Treasury yield fell 16 bp, to about 5.1% $BIV. Lower yields usually help tech $VGT, whose value rests on distant future earnings. Tech fell anyway. That points to investors trimming risk rather than reacting to rates. #econsky
