BBG’s internship for teens is accepting applications right now! 🌱 The Garden Apprentice Program (GAP) at Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a great way for teens to learn about urban agriculture and the environment while working in one of the most exciting public gardens in the world.

"The exchange of knowledge extends beyond practical horticultural skills," says Tania Bagan, co-coordinator of GAP. "Gardening together offers apprentices from all different backgrounds a way to connect and share meaningful parts of their identities."

BBG’s bonsai collection is starting to show off fall colors! 🍁 Though most of Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s regular trees aren’t boasting autumnal hues just yet, maples and a brilliant Virginia creeper bonsai have already joined the party in the C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum.

Trees in BBG’s bonsai collection rotate in and out of the Bonsai Museum seasonally, and the fall display is currently being swapped in. Two maples seen here are “root over rock” style, which mimics when a seed lands in a crack in a rock in nature and searches for soil to survive.

Sharing some sad news about one of BBG’s most fantastic trees. 💔 The American yellowwood located in the Plant Family Collection near the south end of Lily Pool Terrace collapsed during a recent storm. This special tree had been part of BBG’s plant collection since 1916.

Though it bloomed spectacularly in recent years, it had been on the decline for some time. At more than 110 years old, it far exceeded the tree's typical lifespan of 50 to 70 years. Fortunately, a new American yellowwood has been waiting in the wings in a nearby spot just south of the elder.
