Omar Yaghi was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2025. The Wolf Prize has been awarded to scientists from Palestine, Jordan, and Egypt. Naguib Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel for Literature in 1988. I mean come ON this is just embarrassing.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Results were just beyond +/- 2% margin of error of polling, i.e. science. An 80% likelihood of Bolsonaro winning on prediction markets is just vibes.

This may well have been the moment that turned the election for Lula

Lula@lulaoficialbluesky.bsky.social

Trabalhador merece respeito, dignidade e direitos! Aos 17 anos, perdi um dedo trabalhando à noite, quando ainda era menor de idade e precisava trabalhar para não passar fome.

“We wanted to save money on public transport by parking 30% of the bus fleet and yes it is a *total* coincidence it’s election day” is just next-level.

It’s a twist on Tomorrow Never Dies, where 007 has to stop a media mogul who manipulates GPS signals to start a war between superpowers.

New from me for @grist.org: Brazil's election could determine the fate of the Amazon. Lula faces Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, who led the round one vote by 2.2 million votes. Climate and forest scientists argue the Oct 25 second round could decide whether the rainforest breaches a tipping point. (1/n)

grist.orgBrazil’s election could determine the fate of the AmazonThe next president’s policies on deforestation will come at a critical moment for the rainforest’s survival.

Everyone of my international grad students has do e OPT. This is another attempt to crater universities.

STAT@statnews.com

The Trump administration on Wednesday announced a proposed $70,000 fee for a popular work authorization program meant to give students professional experience. https://www.statnews.com/2026/10/07/trump-administration-proposes-fee-targeting-interational-students-optional-practical-training/

I hate to be That Guy, but 47-45 for Bolsonaro is a “hyperventilating into a paper bag” result. PL appears to have over-performed at every level, and with a stacked senate…the ulcer I don’t have is already killing me.

Record abstention in expat vote in USA ~ only 13% of eligible Brazilian voters in USA cast ballots; being attributed in part to fear of ICE action.

A lot of talk today on how university Presidents so re-upping this thread about how the President of Mexico’s UNAM responded to some local students getting beaten by cops on his campus.

Emilio M Bruna@brunalab.bsky.social

When students were attacked by cops in the México City protests of 68, UNAM’s Rector - Javier Barros Sierra - stayed silent for fear of jeopardizing university funding. Just kidding. He ordered all flags to 1/2 mast, led 80,000 down Av. Insurgentes, & gave an epic speech defending free expression

If we Nick Saban had to fill out travel reimbursement forms after “creating value for the university” he would lose his fucking mind.

Awful Announcing@awfulannouncing.bsky.social

This morning on ESPN's First Take, Nick Saban argued player and coach pay are "totally different markets." "That's like asking me 'Does a student's scholarship equal the professor's pay?' I mean, how much value does a coach create for a university?" 📺 💰️

"For a generation, people learning how to address global warming were taught the ideas in the “Wedges” paper by Princeton's Socolow & Pacala. "What they didn’t learn was: “Wedges” was significantly shaped by oil giant BP—one of the single global entities most responsible for causing climate change."

propublica.orgHow BP Execs Influenced a Climate Study That Shaped a Generation of Global PolicyBP sponsored an elite Princeton research center to address the climate problem without getting off fossil fuels. Its key work, a paper known as “Wedges,” guided climate discourse for a generation.

This is among the most intellectually flaccid editorials I’ve ever read. “Humanities & social-science programs…do more to subtract from the sum of human knowledge than add to it” is quite a take from… <checks author’s byline> someone who majored in American Studies. www.wsj.com/opinion/the-...

I don’t blame her, I blame the WSJ for allowing her to allowing her to publish hastily written blog posts without review by an editor and fact checker.

To say nothing of the basic factual errors: “Cornell’s labor contract with its grad students provides a $48,367 annual stipend for 15-hour-a-week jobs. Given that fall and spring semesters run for a combined 30 weeks, this works out to roughly $107 an hour. Sweet.” 15 hours/wk 😂
