Hello friends! Life update: after 1.5 years, I've decided it's time to move on from Bluesky and start the next chapter. Today's my last day! It has been an absolute honor and pleasure to work with such a talented, fun team on a critical mission. I'm so proud of them and excited to see what's next

Don't worry though, they got Tay Zonday!

SE Gyges@segyges.bsky.social

"i may quit fucking firefox over this" issues: 1) refuses to let me go past certain certificate errors. just locks me out, like i am a child and too stupid to ever be trusted to do this 2) video buffering is messed up, i often cannot go back

update: I still hit this bug 10 times per day

gmail STILL fails to save my changes. I will mark an email as read, archive it delete it, whatever, and OVER AND OVER it does not actually save the action what the fuck is going on? this has been happening for months!!

There's a good book about this in general: Complexity by M Mitchell Waldrop All code is part of a random Cambrian explosion of complexity, and the outcomes we've experienced so far are just one way of doing things. Don't over index on what's come before or you'll be stuck with local maximums

I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries

when you create a new google workspace, it doesn't allow you to use youtube at all for the first month or until you spend $30 on your workspace subscription

this is annoying because I just want to have my 0th google user be my work email, and have my 1th user be my personal google account, which is is the one I use youtube with but this error page has no account switcher! so I havent been able to use youtube all week. amazing!

i just booted an old linux installation on an old workstation from like 10 years ago to turn in to a spare orb/CI runner, and holy shit how the fuck did I used to live like this?? the most cursed xfce plus i3 setup, unbelievable I was able to get anything done at all

Just FYI everyone not using AI at least at GLM 5.3 level to secure their systems already is basically fucked, and the aversion to this reality is making things catastrophically worse

ok once you self-host your orbs then amp has the juice, really been enjoying it so far

I want to like amp but as a single dev I just have a hard time swallowing the additional cloud spend to run orbs when I have several very powerful (and not very powerful!) machines at home, with a variety of ISAs and OSes (which matters for my project)

Hey friends, I’m looking for my next gig - ideally something deep in a perf-sensitive stack, somewhere in Rust land. Would appreciate a boost!

I'm gonna be running these again in the future for sure, but they'll be harder and I expect more of candidates The point of the task is literally to see someone use and talk about computers. The point is not to fix all issues It's crazy how many SWEs don't know how computers work

we used to conduct an interview where you had to log in to a linux VM that we’d “pre-broken” with a handful of obvious footguns (disk full, wrong perms, etc etc) and we had to stop running it because opus 4.6-era could one-shot it

The absolute gall of this release jfc

This is an absolutely astounding press release from eMudhra. No apology, a suggestion that the researcher who found their private keys must have used AI, and an attempt to shift blame to auditors... wow. emudhra.com/en/press-release/emudhra-statement-distrust-global-tls-intermediate-root-ca

This take is sending me so bad Its so bad that I'm going to start using it as a retort to "all software has no moat now" people

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

2a) seriously, a big part of LEGOs continual competitive advantage in a market with no moat at all (anyone can 3D print bricks) is that they are really clever in their set design and it is a joy to see the neat ways they do it. 3) Then display memories of the good times putting them together.

nah the reason kubernetes is good now is because many hard working, smart people made it good k3s is great. Cilium is great. There's a mountain of helm charts that let you do basically anything you want, and it all is a virtuous cycle AND agents have also helped, but that's a side thing

Ed@ed3d.net

yeah I think this is also why kubernetes is kinda okay now. we have reached the point where the humans can be out of the coal-mine parts of these theoretically-good-but-in-practice-laborious patterns

this is great, next can someone rewrite llvm?

Rob Palmer@robpalmer.bsky.social

tsrs is a fast new TypeScript compiler port 🔥 This deep-dive blog post by the tsrs creator Max Schwenk explains how he created the compiler and what makes it so fast. Contains excellent infographic animations. building.owner.com/tsrs

oh no

Russ Cox@swtch.com

The details are now public, as of two hours ago. bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi... The secret P-384 keys for these intermediate CAs are all zeros except the last 8 bits. All not-updated software can be MITM'ed now. IOT boxes that can't or don't update are now trivially MITM'able forever.

I'm also interested in figuring out how to do AI building outside my areas of expertise but I am unsure how other than reading a lot and actually gaining some expertise in an area 🤷

the projects I'm excited for are the ones where: 1. there is pre-existing domain expertise on the team 2. there is extensive testing and automation, much more than one would do by hand 3. there is high effort expended over a long period of time (months at least, not just a throwaway project)

There is only a weak correlation between "used AI" and "low effort" Once you understand that, you understand the potential of the time in which we find ourselves

dax@thdxr.com

they've been non stop trying to attack our systems for the past 48 hours a side effect is everything is getting hardened but damn we basically need agents going 24/7 because that's what they have

In the meantime, I'm also happy to consult for your startup, atmospheric or otherwise. I'm an infratructure and backend systems expert (I ran our production systems at bsky) DMs are open!

I've met so many smart, passionate, talented, kind folks at Bluesky itself, and also in the broader ecosystem atproto devs are extremely cool and talented, and you certainly should expect me to continue hacking away on fun atproto projects over time

look, we're sick of having to explain this: you can apply multiple business juices to a single business pipe

ponder@ponder.ooo

business is fundamentally about keeping as much business juice flowing through the business pipe as possible

This is complete as of about 12:00 UTC today 😀

Hello #atproto developers! Tomorrow I'll be changing the DNS record for jetstream.us-east.bsky.network to point back at our actual east coast deployment (currently is just points at the west coast) This means your cursors are gonna get wonky during backfills. Please migrate to west for now!
