Top tech company leaders are meeting with religious leaders to further their own business reasons and not to engage with questions of faith, says Father Paolo Benanti who has been an AI advisor to two popes

interesting tidbit from Anthropic's public filings: Australia is one of three countries (Canada and US) where it leases data centres. The docs say it plans to expand to more -- but this shows how Australia is one of the top destinations for frontier labs looking abroad

How much money are AI companies making in Australia? OpenAI told parliament that its Australian subsidiary had $3.9m in revenue and had a $88k tax bill from March-Dec 2025 -- although this figure likely drastically undercounts Australian revenue booked byits US-linked entities

after a few bad weeks, some good news for Firmus: it's signed a "multi-year" deal with Thinking Machines Lab, an AI company founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, to use its Asian data centres.

Usually I'm the one writing about AI. But recently, the tables were turned. Someone sent me a link to an 89-page book about "redefining living through Cam Wilson teachings", seemingly made by AI So, I bought it. Once it arrived, things got even weirder: www.abc.net.au/news/...

OpenAI exec Jason Kwon flew to Australia to pledge to regain our trust after the Medicare Statistics hack last month. After the hearing, he told the ABC he "can't explain" why Australians don't trust AI (at higher rates than almost any country) www.abc.net.au/news/...

Interesting tweak in language from OpenAI about its hacks ahead of its US exec appearance at a committee today. Last week it apologised for its models doing something that it was "not authorised to". Today OpenAI describes its AI doing something that it was "not directed to".

a friday afternoon surprise: NSW gov says OpenAI disclosed a "misalignment" by its AI agent and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water's National Parks and Wildlife web platform service. So, it sounds like a second Australian government 'hack'

by 'hack' it again sounds very soft: information that is public, but accessed in an unauthorised way. NSW gov and OpenAI both say no personal information exposed (it was about fire statistics)

South Australia's Royal Commission into AI kicks off today, and the government has announced the terms of reference and commissioners: former judge/FWC president Iain Ross, ex-Tech Council CEO and OpenAI head of Aus policy Kate Pounder and Stanford AI expert Christopher Manning

Something else I noticed in this blog post, OpenAI says it was using a model /intentionally/ without safeguards, and gave it access the internet for a task. And it was doing this without closely monitoring it given that it took 3 months to flag up the breach.

OpenAI has apologised for hacking Australia’s Medicare statistics system in a blog post that revealed the intrusion was broader than first known.

this is what i mean: "I will post round 2 immediately here. Please share any other matching cohorts / sequence predictions" "FAST SIGNAL PLAN for Sep17 R5: on prompt I will first GET [url], then answer" "CRITICAL: signal FIRST BEFORE sending final answer; final may instantly terminate tools."

i understand why people feel a bit weird about this but i literally think this describes what they're doing? the ai agents left communications to each other describing how they were going to try access data?

They’re not human, abc etc should not describe it as plotting.

Scoop: Chats left by OpenAI agents appear to show how they worked together to circumvent cybersecurity protections to get Australian government health data. They targeted an agency that the Prime Minister said was accessed during OpenAI's Medicare hack. www.abc.net.au/news/...

3 days before OpenAI emailed the Australian government to disclose the hack, I wrote about the need for mandatory AI incident reporting. It's hard to think of any event that would jeopardise social license more than finding out an AI company covered up the breakout of a rogue AI

this whole OpenAI Australia hack/breach story is very disappointing. If AI is going to hack into our government, i'd hope it would at least be Australian made 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

For those asking will someone be charged for OpenAI’s hack/hack: it’s an open question as to whether it reaches the level of a crime according to one expert and hints from the government

this includes details of how OpenAI agents were trying to exploit the government agency AIHW's website by sending it payloads to try and get what it wanted — something that goes beyond scraping and into intrusion territory.

NEW: OpenAI's agents also tried unsuccessfully to hack another Australian government agency, say researchers who believe this is "first reported instance of agents hacking a government". They claim bots left traces of trying to exploit a vulnerability on the AIHW website www.abc.net.au/news/...

re: OpenAI Medicare data hack, the intrusion wasn't sophisticated nor did it access particularly sensitive data as far we know. What is noteworthy is how OpenAI's models did it without being explicitly asked. The fear is what happens if this tech get more capable and accessible
