A brief intro as there's a steady flow of new folks. I've been a publishing freelancer for about 20 years. Educational publishing is my home base but I try to expand beyond it, especially since the world of textbooks is ... all the things it is right now.

The guys who dismiss any display of empathy or compassion as virtue signaling are really fucking obsessed with doing their own virtue signaling in the weirdest ways imaginable.

I only ever stopped using Firefox for a year or two before Chrome became shitty, so I don't need to come back. I resent having to have anything else installed in the first place! But I need Chrome for work, and for some reason Sephora's website never works right in Firefox.

I emailed Patrick Healy, assistant managing editor for standards and trust at NYT, to ask why their story about a House report with new details of rape allegations against the President of the United States included neither those details, nor a single use of the word "rape." archive.is/1s9AM

I don't know if there's much point in responding to RFK Jr's anti-Arab rant with examples of Arab accomplishments, but if there is, examples from centuries ago are probably not the most effective. That kind of thing tends to just underscore that you don't know of any recent ones.

Not because there AREN'T any (I hope I don't need to point that out). If someone said "Man, Bill's not worth shit, what's he done?" and someone responded that in third grade I correctly guessed the number of jelly beans at the library book fair, I would not be flattered.

I understand where you found the apple, but please do not post to the apples group asking if anyone can help you "identify this road apple."

Close — it does originate from that movie, but it was actually Marlon Brando who proposed the idea! One of his many conditions (including an obscene amount of money) for being in the movie was that he would also get to wear the emblem as Jor-El. So he suggested it should be a family crest. #ngl

After speaking with my therapist about it, I’ve decided to try reopening my NGL. Ask me all your questions about DC Comics for an answer from a professional DC Comics weirdo. Please be respectful.

A local place is doing a Halloween week burger special with "cHEADar cheese, letEYES (lettuce), and chicken FINGER," so if nothing else ... they're not using AI to write that menu.

Truly don’t know how to convey to the young just how much time and money phone companies used to spend trying to get you to use their long distance service, just a couple decades ago.

I always do the big important medical ones, so this time I’m just gonna say—long distance calls are free now.

Similarly, when my then girlfriend got her first cell phone when we were in grad school and misunderstood the fees, it legitimately bankrupted me for the rest of the academic year. I had less than one hundred dollars left for the next six months.

(If the school detail doesn’t make this clear: I got paid in lump sums once a semester. It took the remaining lump to pay the bill, which was thousands of dollars in 90s money. She got paid monthly so paid everything else until the next fall.)

LRT: I’m always talking about how people know so little about anything before they were born and are so confidently wrong about it, but it’s rare to see such a literal example.

First five roleplaying games I played: 1. a single session of Dungeons and Dragons 2. My homebrew game after I was told I wasn’t allowed to play Dungeons and Dragons, combining stuff from the Grail Quest books and A Bard’s Tale 3. Marvel Super Heroes 4. Top Secret/SI 5. Gamma World

(Grail Quest was like Fighting Fantasy but with an Arthurian setting—choose your own adventure books with light combat mechanics.)

(Probably Star Frontiers, Paranoia, and GURPS before I started playing actual AD&D in 7th grade, which remained my main game apart from a couple of Mage campaigns and an obsession with Amber.)

No one is ever tempted to spend hundreds of dollars on a "collectible" when they actually just want to read an old X-Men issue. I do not have to wait until the next trip to Boston or mail a check to get albums by bands I like. You can drink grapefruit juice on rosuvastatin.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

When I first started cooking there were exactly four sources of "spiciness" in the supermarket: Fresh chiles (2 to 3 types) Crushed red pepper Old El Paso salsa Tabasco sauce, one flavor (On the other hand, skirt steak and oxtail were a fuck of a lot cheaper.)

Yesterday on Reddit, a 1980s PSA warning people not to drive if you've had more than X amount of alcohol was misunderstood as an endorsement of drunk driving by permitting driving below that amount. Presentism is frustrating but sometimes the symptom of a social movement's success.

My mother went from voting Democrat for the first time because of how much she fucking hated Sarah Palin to voting straight Democrat because of how much she hates Republicans. She's in her 80s and spends a lot of her time reading US history books and progressive newsletters.

Triptans were first introduced for migraine treatment a few years after I was diagnosed with migraine. The first time I was prescribed sumatriptan, a single pill cost about a tenth of my rent. They're like 30 for $12 now.

Rare fruit that I read about in cooking magazines as exotic ingredients being used by chefs in other countries is now $4 at a supermarket six miles away.

Published authors: when you're preparing your will (you should have a will), keep your literary estate in mind. And keep in mind that everyone else is going to die too, so maybe don't leave the rights to someone your own age, or remind them to similarly make preparations. I promise, this comes up!

(There is one author, and I don't know the specifics, who inherited the rights to a lot of other peoples' work, and then made no provision for them when he died, so that's a whole big stack of stuff in limbo now.)

Just as importantly, if not moreso: there is no database to look up who owns the rights to something. Publishers go out of business or are sucked up in acquisitions. Agents retire. If you care about your work being reprinted (posthumously or otherwise), make the rights holder easy to find.

My wife works in rights, and "we can't print that because the author is dead and there's no clear rights holder" is a real issue and not a rare one.
