My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

get it right according to what standard? it's entirely the umpires judgment. there are no criteria. there is no reality. if an umpire says it's a swing it is one

Trademark threat letters (which these days mostly come from “brand protection” agencies, not actual lawyers) rarely acknowledge things like “fair use” and “reasonable consumers” and “reality”.

bergmayer@bergmayer.net

their trademark complaints are utterly frivolous and should be sanctionable. Trademark law does not prevent people from talking about things and referring to them by name, and trademark lawyer threat letters are some of the most dishonest pieces of legal writing you'll ever see

I don't think every King Gizzard genre experiment is a total success. Their electronic music is....mostly ok for example. But at least they try things. And when it works, boom

They repeatedly covered Trump's appealing promises that he had no way to enact as if they were real and Trump's unappealing promises that he would have the direct authority over as if they were fake - even writing stories farcically confirming Trump's attempts to distance himself from Project2025

This vindictive targeting of career civil servants by Trump fascists precisely because they had served honorably was one of the things clearly at stake in 2024 - Trump promised it - but the media instead gave more coverage to the imaginary idea that Trump had a plan to lower prices to 2019 levels

i wonder what percentage of the electorate now understands that this man and maybe 75 other people like him are actively trying to destroy our lives. that he is the biggest national security threat we have faced, even moreso than bin laden or whoever. its got to be dawning on more and more people

NEW: Elon Musk gave his super PAC $76 million in just two weeks of October, and more than half of its new candidate spending went to one race: the Texas Senate fight against James Talarico. He’s now given more than $445 million this cycle, far more than he spent electing Trump.

This is what I need denialists to understand: the AI evangelists' wildest fever dreams (sentience, the singularity, whatever-the-fuck) don't need to be real for the tech to be hugely consequential. A machine gun doesn't need to be superintelligent.

If the states succeed in breaking up Live Nation, it could stop or reverse the decline of independent music clubs, which are essential to bands just starting out. "Independents 'are the ones who give us our first shows. They’re the ones who work with us when we can draw 100 people,' he said."

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

the outfield alignment thing is stupid, but fielders should not be able to bring cheat sheets on the field (neither should catchers). either memorize what to do for each player on the other team, or read hand signals from a coach www.nytimes.com/athletic/769...

nytimes.comMLB’s Arizona Fall League outfield alignment experiment is a misfire: LawMLB is experimenting with a new rule at one AFL park. Outfielders are restricted as to where they can line up before each pitch is thrown.
