Blades in the Dark's unconventional approach to RPG action checks makes it REALLY clear how few GMs actually use the rules of the RPGs they run. It's something that happens with all RPGs. It's just more blatantly obvious in BitD discussions.

Five players in the Finals were top-10 on the WNBA steals leaderboard this year! I wrote a bit about what steals have meant in this series and talked to all five about their approach to steals:

A small detail I find fascinating about these new MST3K episodes is how they do the lighting on the theater silhouettes now. It's subtle but it looks really really good. Good episode btw

(I'll add i liked the article. The first game had this through line of "The Noble Mission of Zoos!" And that's a hard story to tell without talking about what is actually killing off animals and such)

But as i played more and more, you learn tips and tricks, design your own buildings, and get ideas of layout to try. If i look at all my zoos over my play time, there's a fun ebb and flow to them as i try things, fail, try, succeed, etc.

psst hey A Short Hike is on sale for 45% off during the Birds of Play indie game sale on Steam I really liked it and think you might like it too Steam 🔗 store.steampowered.com/app/1055540/...

Just played through A Short Hike. I love this #indiegame and recommend it to everyone. You have to experience its charms firsthand: little moments add up into an emergent story unique to your playthrough. Work + life have me a bit burnt out lately. I really needed A Short Hike, and am glad for it.

a board game with a good graphic design not only means ''it's pretty'' it also means is easier to understant, which means is quicker to play, which means you will play a lot, which means you will buy it.

Like 10 or more years ago on tumblr i had a big long conversation with a ttrpg blog (CorruptionPoints was the name i think), about adapting Final Fantasy Tactics. At the time, my frame of reference was just 4e, pathfinder, and FATE really.

Alexis Sara@alexissara.bsky.social

I think when asking the question can you make a Fire Emblem TTRPG you must ask yourself what do you value from the series. Adapting anything to a TTRPG asks you to see what you value but fire emblem really will test what portions of the games are key, what setting elements from what game?

But I was fascinated with the idea of trying to adapt like, the job system and the tactics. I also love how the map fills out in Tactics Advance. The blog i was talking with thought it'd work better as a self contained board game than trying to do a full fledge ttrpgs.

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...

Crow Country is one of the most incredible oldschool Survival Horror games you could possibly play, the visual style is immaculate because it looks like what we remember PS1 games looking like; the environments have the feel and texture of pre-rendered backgrounds of the era while being fully 3D. 🐦‍⬛

15 years ago when Apocalypse World was new and people were beginning to understand and work with it, it was seductive to look at "acting under fire" and see, not one basic move of several, but the template underlying all the game's moves. Like @kierongillen.bsky.social 's classic gag:

Wendy Carlos should be on the 20 dollar bill. There should be a 50-foot-tall, solid-gold statue of her in Pawtucket. You should be able to buy all her albums in any format you want and a line of custom branded synths. She should be a household name along with Bob Moog.

The Loch Ness Monster@nessiopeia.space

I think a lot about why Wendy Carlos’ albums are out of print and her wonderful website is now reserved for having a friend of hers tell people to leave her alone. It’s so fucking heart breaking what the world does to trans women

*Love* our latest from @pokachee.bsky.social, about a type of fanwork that's massively popular but one I rarely see discussed in convos about transformative fandom. Fangames are technically interesting—literally using the source material in modding—but even more so from a community/fandom angle:

fansplaining.comPokémon Fangames Evolve Beyond Their OriginsFor fangame creators, the work they develop and the communities they inspire are inextricably tied.
