Hello Bluesky! My new book, THE FIREARM REVOLUTION, is out on 14 April. It’s about how a new technology changed society, and how hard it was to control. Here’s a little thread of what’s inside:

The BBC routinely mentioning their "editorial guidelines" as an excuse for erasing any queer symbols but like... when (AND WAY) did that become a thing divas? Because this was last year

Ariadne Griffin@ariadnereviews.bsky.social

Never been more obsessed with anyone than I am with Matt on The Tournament. Diva behaviour.

He should really be made to teach some generic second year skills module that all the students hate, AND do extra admin, ideally a particularly tedious target-driven bit

The 'academic management roles' are chair of the Faculty of Divinity's exam board and convenor of the MPhil in philosophy of religion. He continues to lecture undergraduates in ethics. With a sharing link for 3 non-subscribers.

Amid all the various horrors of ai in publishing, I am pouring one out for the agents who are being flooded with AI submissions. My worry about that is partly that we'll get MORE nepotism, as people might be more tempted to trust their networks in the face of the deluge.

I would rather we did not have more cuts to higher education, but if they’re going to happen, UEA UCU have some good thoughts here on how to avoid (more) cold spots in provision

An extraordinary piece of work by my local branch (I think I corrected a typo and added a now deleted sentence). A Strategy to Avoid Geographic and Subject Cold Spots in the East of England

You know how edited collections of academic essays can take a while to come out? Well, one of the contributors to this one died sixteen years ago.

Excellent article on the book scam industry by an expert in the field.

Oisín McGann@oisinmcgann.bsky.social

If you’re an author who’s been receiving verbose AI scam emails on a daily basis, and you’re wondering how gullible and ego-driven people think you are, this article helps to explain them. Sadly, they are successful enough to have been built into a big business. www.thedial.world/articles/new...

Opera North report: Rigoletto revival is excellent all round. Eugene Onegin okay but the production concept (80s Soviet) a bit half-baked and the leads though fine singers not entirely convincing as their characters.

The police are investigating. They will have their lines of enquiry. Please share this image widely so that everyone knows what it looked like.

Historical Marker Ahead@historicalmarker.bsky.social

This stinks that a plaque at an English castle acknowledging Caribbean prisoners of war got taken right after it went up. It’s an insult to those who got it placed and the memories of the people it commemorates. Usual motive for something like this is: 1. We hate “woke” 2. Want the metal for scrap

Just trying to find a colleague at Birmingham Uni and their ridiculous AI bot pops up to annoy me. Thought there was a funding crisis in higher education but somehow they can afford this nonsense?

Great observation on the importance of human engagement in research (and read the whole thread for findings on why people leave academia)

Katie Spoon@kspoon.bsky.social

6,500 academics across 300 US institutions responded to the prompt. I was absolutely floored. As a computer scientist, my instinct was to analyze these responses with NLP-based methods. But after I read a few, it didn’t feel like we could do justice to these responses without reading them ourselves.

Have had that horrible experience of being asked to change the briefest paragraph in one of my books so a particular foreign publisher could avoid arrest in that country’s massive LGBTQ+ crackdown. I had to decline and therefore not be published - you don’t negotiate with tyrants - but what a world.

And there are translations coming into Bulgarian, Swedish, Danish and French plus a co-edition with a Swiss publisher though I don’t know which language(s) they’re doing.

The really worrying finding in this research is that 37% of UK adults believe in the Great Replacement theory

Maria Sale@mariasale8.bsky.social

I think we all knew this, but good to have research backing it up. Christian nationalism in Britain driven by people who seldom go to church, says report www.theguardian.com/world/2026/o...
