One of my years-in-development projects is finally getting announced next week. It’s about children’s play & storytelling, but over the last few year and it’s accidentally also become an incredibly messy ‘AI could never do this‘ manifesto.

This is one of the many reasons why I use my partner's hand-drawn art for my book covers - AI could never.

Fiends & Phantoms 3 Gothic and horror tales of religion gone wrong - vampire priests - Frankensteined saints - an ill-advised ladder to Heaven - tormented monks - an even more tormented priest, pursued by the owner of his precious relic... #booksky 📚💙

Someone made their version of the font used in lots of Japanese storage, all of which is essentially peak Graphic Design Is My Passion - I cannot afford the full version, but AI could never gt-maru.com

yeah, 100%. I'm thinking about the modernist typography of the 50s and early 60s - absolutely stunning work, art in itself. Would love to see a return to that.

And Question Time of course. They want 'provocative', and what could be be provocative than a fascist.

My current personal website design ethos is unironically ‘graphic design is my passion’ but also Neocities exists, which is explicitly about treating it as aspirational because humans (also I could not hope to reach those heights)

Perhaps much more hand-made looking art paired with fabulous typography. Back to the old orange-spine Penguin covers, that sort of thing. AI just can't do that, not without some very clever prompting, & even then it would just be quicker / more efficient to hire a designer & illustrator

I think AI fits very neatly into that maxim that you can have two of the following things but not all three: fast, cheap, good

With Microsoft Publisher, any village fete could knock up a decent poster with minimal skills and effort. With AI, those same people can put together a real piece of shit.

I basically think of the "graphic design is my passion" meme as aspirational now, a lodestone of authenticity

Heck, clip art and comic sans would have a charming naïveté these days.

The number of things that can no longer be reasonably ordered from UK suppliers is ever growing. It's not even the charges so much as the hassle and the chance that your parcel will be shipped back to sender leaving you still liable for mysteries charges.

Thanks to everyone who braved the storms to catch Ghosts this weekend. You’ve officially made it the number one movie in the UK!

My friend Soad in Gaza needs your help. When an unbearable situation continues for many years, you HAVE to bear it but that doesn't make it less of a daily horror. Can you donate a little to help lighten her load today? Medicines and food and vitamins are so expensive. chuffed.org/project/1838...

Sadly we've had to pause shipping to Europe as the additional customs charges are just too much faff to work out properly. Seems ridiculous that we can post more easily to the US, Canada and Australia than we can to our nearest neighbours, but here we are. 🫠 Hopefully things will improve in future.

Sobs in I have a god kid in europe and readers I post packages to in ireland. And it's already currently almost impossible to post things to Ireland/europe without weird charges and returns. Brexit, the gift that keeps on giving.

Eventually, it was decided to proceed woth the work required to deal with the One Ring Problem unofficially, as the need was pressing. It was noted wryly by all, however, that on successful completion it was reported as "magnificent work by the Council of Elrond" in internal comms.
