Nice!

Londoners! I've made a website that discovers everything going on in the physical world of London (talks, exhibitions, gigs, plays, etc.) and finds stuff it thinks you'll like. You teach it your interests by swiping events left or right. Decent recs after ~100 swipes. Check out realworld.events!

Nice!

Save your data to local Markdown files you own forever, and can access completely offline. Obsidian now helps you migrate from all the major proprietary formats including Notion, Evernote, OneNote, Google Keep, Apple Notes, and more.

I like high quality open-access documents, such as articles from #MDPI or books from European Mathematical Society, #EMS. I like posts about open-access those docs in Bluesky or LinkedIn, even better.

Someone who dislikes MDPI added a negative reply. Just don't use it if you dislike it. No need to spread your negative energy on the Internet. Of course I blocked the account. Maintaining a healthy atmosphere matters a lot to your life.

Found out the way to completely disable alerts in my phone. Peace of mind. Sorted. Didn't know BBQ was such a huge deal lol

I charged my Pebble Time 2 in July 1, and in July 31, it has 31% battery. Very nice! And, this week happens to be the 31st week of the year :) #Pebble #PebbleWatch #PebbleTime2

CppCast is back! 🎉 This time, monthly basis with Jason being the host. It was also nice to hear Rob's name. The topic was great too! 👍

Can't agree more. I'm honestly not so motivated to open Bluesky because of this.

dan@danabra.mov

imagine how much more appealing Bluesky could be to people all over the world if it could fix this single problem

you'll be my personal hero if you: - make "show less" actually show less of what i pressed it on - stop injecting viral banalities into my Discover feed - downrank likers in popfriends whose likes i "show less"d on

Something impossible until recently is now possible. Easily. How far are we gonna go this year?

Simon Willison@simonwillison.net

Can Claude Sonnet 4 write x86 assembly? I ran an experiment today and got Claude plus Claude Code to build, run and debug a pleasing Mandelbrot fractal in assembly, compiled via Docker on my Mac Full details, including prompts and Claude Code transcript, here: simonwillison.net/2025/Jul/2/m...

This is Literate Programming. Its importance deserves much more attention.

Sy Brand@tartanllama.xyz

I think if you're writing a technical book/post/documentation, you have to stick to this principle: If the code isn't directly loaded from a tested source file, or copy-pasted from one, it doesn't go in the document. "I just need to make a little edit to the code in the post, it'll be fine" No

If you can navigate team members when they should reinvent the wheel or prioritize other tasks, you may be a good engineering manager.

Guillaume Laforge@glaforge.dev

It's good to reinvent the wheel sometimes! endler.dev/2025/reinven... Great post by Matthias Endler. It helps understanding how wheels work, how you can fix them when broken, how to make better wheels if really needed, or how to find creative use cases for wheels by thinking outside the box.

Bluesky now insists that users must have a Google account if they want to be “recognized as authentic”. This is a very disappointing move.

Bluesky Safety@safety.bsky.app

We're excited that verification badges have made it easier to quickly recognize authentic accounts, especially in moments of breaking news. Now, we're expanding our roll-out. Notable and authentic accounts can apply for verification or to become a Trusted Verifier via the form linked in our blog.

A really interesting podcast discussion on the spectrum between local first and everything server.

localfirst.fm@localfirst.fm

Episode #24 is out. Ben Holmes (@bholmes.dev) on exploring local-first software by building a simple sync engine from scratch. Full episode links and show notes in the comments.

The nutrition label in the US is really not helpful for people's health.

Brad Fitzpatrick@bradfitz.com

TIL labels can round sodium down to 0. (Instead of 3mg) FDA: "A statement of the number of milligrams of sodium in a specified serving of food expressed as zero when the serving contains less than 5 milligrams of sodium, to the nearest 5-milligram increment when the serving contains 5 to 140 ..."

Vendor lock in is what Apple strives for. People who are locked in with Apple products have no idea how terrible Apple products are. They die without realising that they are locked in. It's almost like you are born in a dictatorship country where you have zero knowledge about the outside world.

Linux/Unix, Android, or even Windows are heterogeneous systems where they support various hardware configs that are hard to support consistently. This diversity is a challenge but nurtures the innovation and robustness of software which Apple fundamentally denies and kills.

Apple knows they are weak in software tech. Their mistake is that they decided to focus on myopic vendor lock-in rather than improving their software tech stack for long term sustaining success. bsky.app/profile/gerg...

One reason Apple fought tooth and nail to disallow web payments for apps: Because Apple’s IAP is SO bad in many ways, and *so many* apps will move to web-based payments now not mainly because of the 30% Apple fee, but because of how bad IAP is (from a dev perspective). Let me give you21 examples:
