Shadecursed: The Bestiary Book One is on Royal Road to read for free! Even better, I am posting all the art I did for it in the chapters, including character sheets and sketches. Currently half of the book is posted, and I'm adding a chapter a day. Check it out!

royalroad.comShadecursed: The Bestiary Book OneAre you brave, little speck? The world of Erit needs saving, which means it needs some mighty heroes. Unfortunately, all the universe can provide is an irreverent faun named Meadow, a stuck-up banshe...

Everyone's like "try this LAVENDER calming scent! Try this overpowering mint!" and i'm over here just wanting to smell damp lava rocks i mean seriously have you smelled those? Perfection

I don't love will-they-won't-they storylines and I wish there were less of them. Not zero. Just not one in every single piece of media ever made.

In my most curmudgeonly moments, I don’t see why presenting the prose output of a machine built on mass theft as your own scholarly work should be evaluated less harshly than old school plagiarism. Traditional plagiarists at least had to identify and evaluate the works they were going to copy.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

it is, frankly, fucking incredible that people are just discovering that AI cannot add anything to a conversation. The reason it's incredible is because people who have extensively studied it, like myself, have beeN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

Oh, and FYI The reason I withdrew Shadecursed from all consideration wasn't because I was failing. It was because I didn't want to run the risk of my publisher feeding my work into GenAI. I will not tradpub until this AI shit is fixed.

In the meantime, readers who wish to support authors should consider buying indie books. Most of us have CHOSEN to self-pub because of AI. It is not a last resort, IE "because the book sucks."

They must know it's too late. You shouldn't be faced with outrage to do the right thing. Authors should understand that this org will do what IT thinks is right, rather than what its MEMBERS think is right. I don't know. I am angry and I think a WRITING society should already know AI is bad.

The Society of Authors has withdrawn from the ill-conceived concession to the dark side that was the "ethical GenAI" charter because of the mass and vocal outrage of authors. Publishers need to be made afraid of this level of anger too.

Most of all, I want to instill this knowledge: There is no ethical AI. You can't build a dataset on your own data. It needs BILLIONS of examples to function. And it's take-take-taking things even when it says it's not. Look at those math proofs it ripped off.

Do you think those researchers "asked chatGPT" about their work thinking it would then steal all their work and beat them to the finish line? Anyway, they should have known better, I don't think they can learn to know better, and the society should be disbanded.

If they made this blunder THIS FAR into the AI era, they aren't paying attention, or they don't care. Neither are good. An org that supports authors should have its fingers on the pulse of ethics and knowledge, especially around something so controversial.

Is it selfish to want this society to be ruined? I don't think so. I want it to be a mirror to show what happens when you can't do the most basic research when it comes to what your own members want. I NEED people to realize that AI will not be tolerated in any creative circles.

"New America" is so funny because while the other ones are completely fuck-stupid, at least they make geographical sense. Not that anyone should use the new names. But "New America?" This is America. We are in America. There is no old America. This is it. This is the first case of America.

These books are GREAT for people who are into the anime/manga scene and enjoy the positivity in the relationships between magical girls. Support this author! She's pretty epic.

No one takes a stand anymore. I think I need to talk about that for a minute. Everyone is so afraid of missing out on SOMETHING that they stand for NOTHING. This boils down to "everyone is using AI now, so we must adapt." But this is circular reasoning.

In fact, authors would be the biggest conquest in this slopshow, since every novel is at least 100K. What a victory that is for any company that manages to grab an author! The only inevitabilities are culture shifts that happen naturally. No one could stop the internet. But no one wanted to.

This is getting long, but the tl;dr is this: capitulating to the whims of big tech is a bad look, and this is going to bite the Society of Authors square on the ass. Stand for nothing, end up with nothing.

Because I know where I stand. So does every other author who values real human creativity. We don't need to be part of a trade organization who needs to define the use cases for artificial intelligence. We need an organization who will say "enough is enough" and refuse to be part of it.

I see this debate with clarity. The idea that we cannot live without AI, or that we will HAVE to use AI or be left behind, is a manufactured set of rhetoric pushed by people who stand to profit from the use of AI. Get authors on board--somehow--and you make money off subscriptions to LLMs.

But by what? The AI bubble is bursting. The CEOs who drove the propagation of this technology can no longer explain away the loss of revenue. Something is about to give. The lack of thought that went into this decision confuses me.

The Society of Authors is a trust, so I think I can safely assume this is not for money. Has the CEO been so dazzled by the smoke and mirrors AI provides that she thinks all authors just need some guidance and they'll all want to use it? Does she think AUTHORS are confused?

Arguably, the "Society of Authors" is supposed to represent authors, and take a stand based on what its members want. I have never met an actual author who wants AI incorporated into anything, which means this body is refusing to represent its members.

I assume people pay dues to be protected, or represented, or heard, or supported, et cetera. This Society of Authors isn't just tone deaf, they've heard the dissent and decided it's not worth losing members over. Like any other weak-willed organization, they likely fear being left behind.

Those disappointed looks, the shouts of dismay, the shame levied at bad decision-making... That's why Republican candidates don't have town halls as much anymore. When they have to face the people they're fucking up, it's no longer fun. The guilt seeps in.

In a larger scale, people who are supposed to represent their groups no longer feel compelled to do so. If they only backlash is on the internet, they can just ignore it, go find their echo chamber for asspats, and keep on keepin' on. Representative bodies now only represent themselves.

The most common argument I hear against not boycotting something--an argument that nearly EVERYONE makes--is that other people are going to use The Thing, so why shouldn't they? What if, instead, everyone who said that just didn't use The Thing?

The logic itself is flawed. In some ways, this comes from the internet being so progressively EVERYTHING and people shying away from in-person meetings. You can hide on the internet. You don't get the disappointed looks from your peers if you were to face them. So you're emboldened to do whatever.

The only reason it looks like "everyone is using AI" is because people are afraid to not use it. For what? I don't know. But "everyone" wouldn't be using AI if organizations like this would grow a spine and refuse to use it. It's like modern attempts at boycotts...

I love how people are so fucked up when it comes to critical thinking that they don't even know what a "primary source" is. Although the internet-speak flat affectation on "what" made me laugh out loud a little.
