Aside from the emotional bond aspect that everyone is rightly dunking on this guy for, reading a book to a child usually involves questions and interruptions and so forth, which models an interactive rather than a passive approach to reading.

Jess Calarco@jessicacalarco.com

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

The exception that proves the rule is the opening scene of the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy miniseries. They turned people walking into the room and sitting down into very effective character introductions.

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

One of the first things they teach you in film school is to cut "shoe leather" out of scenes — instead of starting the scene with people walking into a room, saying hello and sitting down, they're already sitting down, mid-conversation — and idk take it a step further and do that to a lot of plot

This was in a gated community. And the 99pi piece I linked notes that the lack of sidewalks in Japan actually makes it safer for pedestrians. It's almost as if the things we do to pretend we're making our children safer, we're actually doing to keep them dependent.

I fundamentally disagree with this argument that fascism is a holdover from prehistoric societies rather than an inherently modern phenomenon. Short thread.

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

I want to expand on this in a short thread. Fascism sucks. It is also not going away: it is an effectively permanent part of modern representative politics because it is an effectively permanent part of human nature. We have to be prepared to push back against it, basically forever.

Fascism on the other hand tries to remake society at home. It takes elements from an imagined past, but that's only raw material for forging a new mass politics out of the diversity of interests. Peasants and workers are no longer expected to stay quiet, they must join.

To sum up: fascists hated certain things that we think are inherently modern (social mobility and a lack of consensus worldview to ground society). But their response was a modern one, to create a new social order centered on power and strength.

Bret is more of an expert on pre-modern states and war than I am, but istm there's a fundamental difference between justifying aggression with traditional things like religion or honor, versus justifying it as a means of total social mobilization, meant to cure cultural decadence.

When the popes sent squabbling young knights off to Jerusalem, that was an attempt to externalize all that violence against a demonized (badly misunderstood) religion. But it the goal was to return to an imagined golden age, and preserve a peaceful traditional society in Europe

Fascism is specifically a response to the dislocations of modernity; we can think of it as the negative twin of democracy. Democracy promises fulfillment of the will of the people, fascism tries to accomplish this by limiting who counts as "the people."

While it seems to be true that human nature has a tendency to out-group hostility and hierarchy (balanced by a sense of fairness), calling that "fascism" empties that concept of its usefulness. Yes, states throughout history have been aggressive and violent, but that doesn't make them fascist.

I continue to advocate for decentering Trump's supposed emotions and instead to focus on the consequences of his actions.

The underlying assumption here is that owning a car gives you the right to endanger other people's lives, but riding a bike makes you a second class citizen, who must remain subservient and vulnerable at all times.

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

Every conversation about bike lanes is like: "Car crashes kill a huge number of people every day, including pedestrians, cyclists, & car occupants. Good bike infrastructure has been shown to make everyone safer (& doesn't increase congestion)." "But sometimes cyclists break rules & hit people!"

I once had a cab driver drift into the bike lane and nearly hit me. When I pointed out that that was MY lane, he asked "Do you own a car?" As if that was what qualified one for the right to space on the street.

I haven't read this, but it seems like it would pair well with The Crying of Lot 49 (another nice product of Cornell University).

This is not the difficult question that it is for some artists (Polanski, Woody Allen, etc.) "HP is a mildly entertaining hodgepodge of fantasy tropes" and "Rowling uses the HP money to fund a hateful discrimination campaign" are two true and logically independent statements.

This post is unavailable.

I'm always in favor of analyzing popular culture for its political valences. "The ethnic stereotypes in HP can be a bit broad" or "the house elves plot line betrays a disdain for leftist activism." Fine, knock yourselves out. But the derivative nature of the series means it won't get you very far.

I think the fact that an apparently normie, middle-of-the-road personality went all in on denying some people's rights says more about what boatloads of money does to a person's brain. (The James Cameron path is probably the best case scenario).
