Complexity is ubiquitous in the world around us. But different stimuli are complex for different reasons. Does the mind nevertheless represent a ‘unified’ notion of complexity across domains? In @nathumbehav.nature.com, @chazfirestone.bsky.social & I show the answer is: yes! osf.io/preprints/ps...

i teach this result in intro psych for this very reason! great thread by @kosakowski.bsky.social

Heather L Kosakowski@kosakowski.bsky.social

Goren et al. (1975) found that newborns tested within an hour of birth preferentially tracked schematic faces over scrambled controls. Johnson et al. (1991) replicated that preference. That finding survives the review & meta-analysis & deserves at least as much attention as the debunking.

When and how do newborns see a face? @nmwilkinson.eurosky.social and colleagues identify a serious problem in how a foundational newborn study has been interpreted. But the Bluesky victory lap is leaving out a rather important detail: neonates track FACE drawings! bsky.app/profile/nmwi...

Dr Nick@nmwilkinson.eurosky.social

New paper! Accepted at Perspectives on Psychological Science. A textbook finding in infant psychology is that newborns - within ~1 hour of birth - visually track a simplified 'three blob' facelike stimulus further than its inverted control (see picture). This suggested inborn knowledge of faces!

Could someone figure out who you are based only on how you produce random sequences? Yes, say @talboger.bsky.social & @samiyousif.bsky.social in a new paper exploring idiosyncratic random behavior. Very creative work taking advantage of a massive (50,000+ subject) sample from an online game. 👇

Flip 8 imaginary coins. Now roll 8 imaginary dice. Now pick 8 random spots on a screen. These tasks are all different, yet you might have a unique 'random fingerprint' that applies across them. See more in a new paper with @samiyousif.bsky.social, now in press @ Open Mind. osf.io/preprints/ps...

Incredible to see all the new directions researchers are taking visual anagrams! Such fascinating and useful stimuli, including in this new work by @moonliyp.bsky.social (see rest of 🧵)

Can you see a monkey face in the middle image? Normally, when you turn a face upside down, it’s still a face. But rotating a visual anagram like this can change what it appears to depict. We asked how 🐒🧠 represents these transformation-dependent changes. (1/n)

for the 2nd time in 3 years, we @jhu.edu are spending the semester in a reading group on foundational issues in cognitive science, centered on the origin & format of concepts. 8 faculty from 4 depts, + many of their students & postdocs. can’t say enough about this wonderful intellectual community! 🤩

Learned a lot from the recent BBS target article by @mdubova.bsky.social and @sabinasloman.bsky.social, and also from this new commentary by @talboger.bsky.social! Take a look at Tal's explainer thread below 👇

BBS recently published a great piece by @mdubova.bsky.social & @sabinasloman.bsky.social on “Excess capacity learning”. I argue D&S’s framework overlooks a special kind of representation that encodes information both minimally and perfectly: lossless compression. philpapers.org/archive/BOGC...

WOW, just one week from new paper to new feature! Thanks @jspsych.org team 🙏🤩

jsPsych@jspsych.org

Response duration tracking is now an option in jsPsych 8.3.0. Decide whether to trigger responses on key press (current default) or wait for key release to get both initial response time and response duration. We handle edge cases like multiple keys being pressed and tabbing away from the browser.

the best news!! 🤩

well, i suppose i can now share a spot of good news. i've accepted a permanent position at australian catholic university. i'll be moving to sydney in january. i'm just delighted

When we consider children in cultural evolution, we tend to cast them as recipients of adult culture. In our BBS target article, @sheinalew.bsky.social & I argued there's more: through 'peer cultures', children actively drive cultural adaptation. Our final paper + a rich set of responses is out now!
