Today’s annoyance as an Aussie indie game publication: Receiving a review code one day after embargo lifts and then reading an article elsewhere of “here’s how long it took 5 people to finish this game”, implying 5 separate people from one site got codes while we get the scraps.

Great work from @cutiejea.bsky.social on this one!

Checkpoint Gaming@checkpointau.bsky.social

So how much does it really cost for an indie developer to showcase their game at @paxaus.bsky.social ? ...and is it worth it? We found out. checkpointgaming.net/features/202...

Wolverine is great! Confused that a 78 Metacritic average means people think this is a bad game. 78 is literally “good to great”. It’s like a 4 star movie review. And it isn’t even released yet to the public so stop whinging! Games are fun! THIS IS MEANT TO BE FUN, REMEMBER!?!?

REVIEW: Marvel’s Wolverine “This cinematic adventure is further proof that the studio knows how to craft a compelling superhero story, balancing intense action with delightful character moments in equal measure.” checkpointgaming.net/reviews/2026...

Super strange. Age verification is one thing, but forcing people to use a credit card is bonkers.

Checkpoint Gaming@checkpointau.bsky.social

Valve has introduced a controversial new age verification system to Steam, locking Australian gamers out of purchasing R18+ games unless they have a credit card. @steampowered.com @valvesoftware.com checkpointgaming.net/news/2026/09...

What I love about this is that at @checkpointau.bsky.social we have reviewed all the major finalists here. It feels good to cover so many Aussie games every year and give them the space they deserve!!

The AGDAs finalists have been revealed for 2026, and it’s another stellar year for Aussie videogames. @igea.bsky.social @agdas.bsky.social checkpointgaming.net/news/2026/09...

New movie review from me. I wanted to have fun with this one - and it has SOME brief redeeming moments… but mostly I was left confused, frustrated and wanting more.

MOVIE REVIEW: The End of Oak Street "...despite my love of dinosaurs, far-out concepts and the wonderful Hathaway, I mostly found this jaw-snapping dino adventure to be rather toothless." checkpointgaming.net/features/202...

So I wrote about 18 previews from my time at Summer Game Fest, which I’m pretty proud of. Even though it was two months ago I still feel like I’m recovering from what was a whirlwind and an event that I now plan to visit each year. Super valuable.

Play Big Walk. And, contrary to “please visit our website”, don’t even read this review or anything else really if you’re at all interested in it. Go in blind and just enjoy.

Checkpoint Gaming@checkpointau.bsky.social

REVIEW: Big Walk “Evolving the social game format in a way that feels almost unrecognisable, House House has produced something that is as compelling as it is confident in achieving what it set out to achieve.” @househouse.com checkpointgaming.net/reviews/2026...

Dragged my guy across the world just to hang out on my radio show, no biggie. 😇 @davecobb.com

I haven’t been posting much, mostly because I’ve been very loved up and focused on that as a priority rather than engaging in *gestures wildly at everything*. Anyway here’s some pics of my handsome wonderful men and my happy face for your feed.

This time of year is tough for me now. 2 years ago, I spent my last Xmas Day with my Mum, while she was in hospital. Last year, Xmas was seriously difficult. Despite spending it with other loved ones, it was a sad time, and being in my home, without Mum, was the worst. (1/3)

So, this year, I’m going to re-write the narrative of what the holiday period means to me. Matt and I will be flying to L.A. ne week to spend Xmas and NYE with *chosen* family l care about. Celebrations, theme parks, escape rooms, insane food, parties, shows, all alongside truly wonderful people.

New movie review from me! I love Wicked, and I love this movie, even though it doesn't quite solve the "Act 2" problem with the theatre musical.

Checkpoint Gaming@checkpointau.bsky.social

MOVIE REVIEW: Wicked: For Good "It’s a faithful recreation, for better and worse, and for fans of the original theatre show, it’s hard to want for anything more than that." checkpointgaming.net/features/202...

Lumines Arise is a special game; I can’t stop playing it!

Checkpoint Gaming@checkpointau.bsky.social

REVIEW: Lumines Arise "When you’re in a flow-state, headphones in, matching blocks, vibing with the gorgeous soundtrack and being mesmerised by the dazzling visuals, time simply melts away." @enhance-experience.com checkpointgaming.net/reviews/2025...

Alright it’s Halloween, so I’m going to start my watch of the whole The Conjuring franchise, starting with the first one from 2013! I’ve seen this one before back when it came out, but it’s been a while. Let’s see where it all began!

Support video game journalists!! Especially local indie publications!!

Reviewing Battlefield 6 felt like a huge task, particularly after flying to L.A. (on a trip that turned out to be personally life-altering) to be a part of its big reveal. Thankfully, the game is genuinely great, and even after publishing I’m itching to jump right back in.

Checkpoint Gaming@checkpointau.bsky.social

REVIEW: Battlefield 6 " #Battlefield6 manages to offer the most exhilarating multiplayer shooter experience on the market; a fantastic, bombastic sequel that confidently delivers on its many promises for those who like to break stuff." checkpointgaming.net/reviews/2025...

I think one of the saddest things about being a millennial is remembering a time when technology was advancing in a way that made life better and easier and more exciting instead of actively, intentionally worse

So today I hosted a panel called “Out, Loud and Critical: Queer Journalists Changing Games Media”. Since starting Checkpoint Gaming 11(!) years ago, focusing on the importance of queer voices in the video game industry has been paramount. 🧵(1/4)

I’m stoked, and it was a fantastic addition to my PAX weekend - the expo that I love so much right here in Melbourne every year. Queer voices are important - not just in games journalism, but ALL journalism - and I’m thrilled to be even a small part of leading that charge. 🧵(3/4)

I’m super proud of what I’ve built (with the help of my wonderful team)… and today, we had a packed house at our panel; they had to turn people away due to capacity. Then, we nailed it! Important conversation and insights, and 5 fabulous people all sharing their experiences from the heart. 🧵(2/4)

Once again, thrilled to have roped in a bunch of incredibly talented people to have meaningful discussions during @paxaus.bsky.social 🥰

PANEL ALERT!! Saturday, 12:30pm PAX Together Theatre - Out, Loud, and Critical: Queer Journalists Changing Games Media Join host @checkpointboss.bsky.social and awesome journos @alicedkc.bsky.social, @nomibelle.bsky.social, @jesszam.bsky.social and @sifterhq.bsky.social for a brilliant discussion!

I loved Good Boy. It’s rare for a movie to offer something completely different, and seeing horror from the perspective of a dog made for a terrifying, uncomfortable and compelling watch. Indy is easily the best pet actor in history. A must see for anybody who loves dogs.
