NIH grants peeps are working hard, on a Sunday night, trying to get our grants out to us as their world is in chaos. We owe them all a huge debt. Science peeps: be sure to send your grants personnel (grants management, POs and SROs) a note of encouragement and gratitude. @sarathomasy.bsky.social

Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office ๐Ÿ˜ญ It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. Iโ€™ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.

Walking is an essential part of life- yet we do not know how the nervous system generates the underlying neural programs. Please find our sneak-peek preprint on neural generation of locomotion in the mouse: biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Pan-neuronal one-spot tracks in lumbar cord w clearing & LSM

What is or isn't a "BCI"? We argue in Nature BME today that if the tech stimulates or records brain activity AND does computation, it's a BCI. www.nature.com/articles/s41... But we still need a way to discuss different types of BCI separately... ๐Ÿงต #BCI #BrainComputerInterface

Super exciting. The culmination of years of careful, theory-guided experiments and detailed analysis. Love it.

Can the motor system use sensory expectations to prepare for unexpected events? Excited to share my latest work with @andpru.bsky.social โ€“ where we establish that sensory expectations shape neural population dynamics in motor circuits! ๐Ÿงต and paper below 1/

This is an excellent thread summarizing many of my own objections. Iโ€™d like to add two thoughts: ๐Ÿงต 1/n

Dan Goodman@neural-reckoning.org

There's a movement in neuroscience suggesting we should be pursuing bigger bets with larger teams. I think there's a case for doing a bit of this, but I think it's a bad idea to prioritise it for two reasons, and a good case for saying we should be moving in the exact opposite direction. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿงช

Live demos are hard, letting anyone try out the demo is harder. Hardware makes all of this doubly so. Thank you to everyone who dropped by our posters, engaged in discussions, and tried out the surface EMG demo. We were humbled by the interest! #NeurIPS2024

1/ We just open-sourced two large wrist electromyography (EMG) datasets - one towards typing without a keyboard and the other for predicting hand poses - with baselines. We believe these will help advance research into making high bandwidth non-invasive neuromotor interfaces a reality!

Our mentor and dear friend Krishna Shenoy had the same refrain, though with a different perspective. But ultimately, peeling all the other layers off, our jobs/impact as scientists comes down to the people.

This post is unavailable.

Two MASSIVE datasets of EMG released by Meta Reality Labs. Really exciting to see these types of datasets being publicly released!! (Note: personal COI)
