Or even as our first resort… “In the last resort it is our love for people which counts for more than our love for principles.” William Gass, “The Case of the Obliging Stranger”

“The Emperor must not be told night is coming…” “The Lights Are On Everywhere” by Charles Simic “The New York Review of Books” (December 1, 2005)

Oh yes. I’d dearly love to inhabit a society in which my “ultra-radical leftist” concerns for a better world, and for the wellbeing of others, were considered entirely unremarkable.

Im looking forward to becoming a centrist as soon as we tax wealth and make some radical changes in increasing equal opportunity.

There was a brief window in history when the bicycle still felt like freedom itself — affordable, democratic, shared: before cars fully took over, before radio and television began pulling people back inside, there was the simple, physical way for friends to move through the same afternoon together.

I filled out my ballot two weeks ago. Rather than trust Trump’s post office I hand-carried it to our town clerk’s office. It was a pleasant stroll, but I’d have climbed a mountain, crossed a desert, and swam a river to deliver it.

Red Lentil & Toasted Pecan vegan pate on sourdough whole-wheat bread just out of the oven. This pate is so good and not all that difficult to make (we’ve never bothered to include the miso paste). I just realized that we had it today with French green (Puy) lentil soup. Lentilmaxxing?

I planted my first potato eye when I was 8 or 9, but I was too impatient to let them grow before digging them all up. Older now and somewhat more patient, but the quiet pleasure of unearthing these little treasures has never faded.

Digging potatoes in this exact spot when my wife came called out from the kitchen window to say that an airplane had crashed into a World Trade Center building in NYC. I remember every year 😔 Kennebecs are up. Starting on the Reds.

Of the hundreds of photos shared from Japan by my brother in the past month, this is my favorite. A small girl alone on an errand. Parents nowhere to be seen, but in the care of a supportive and caring society. I want this for us.

Something I wrote in 2013 has popped into mind many times since. People, for example, bicycle past and give me a smile. They're saying, "Don't you just love this? This weather. This day. This path we're on." We bear many (too many) of our sorrows alone, but joy? Joy must be shared.

Stopping to chat with a neighbor yesterday (a prim and proper lady, if ever there was one), she asked if I liked her lawn ornament. When I replied that it was nice she asked me to come over for a closer look. ‘Twas surprising, but not shocking. This monster has pushed us all to the breaking point.

Too many mailboxes later, I think I’ve finally got it. The horizontal arm swivels when the snow plow blasts it. Three winters and counting 🤞 “Perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away…” Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
